From what I've heard they're really only good as Back-up drives, USB is uisually to slow for most stuff.

As Cyrax9 said they really are not that good and tend to be very slow. But if your computer has a firewire port init you could get a fast drive for that.

How about an iPod? With firewire connectivity and 10 or 20 (your choice) gigabytes of space, you'll be back in business in no time. Did I mention it's also an portable MP3 player? Think different.

Hmm... if you're looking for an external HDD, your best bet is to whop in a firewire card and use a firewire HDD, which will still be faster than a USB2 (once they come out). Whatever you do, don't use this hard drive to runh apps - just use it for documents, else your performance will drop through the floor and make a nasty dent in the upper mantle.

Moral of this story:
Always plan for expansion when you buy your case
Always make sure your motherboard can support at least four items of onboard hardware
Try to predict what upgrades you are likely to require over the life of the machine
Don't buy ****ty cheap computers that have no option for expandability whatsoever" The strength of the PC is it's modular nature.
