What's the point?
Every time a game comes out like Halo 2, everyone makes a big fuss about it. Why? what makes the sequel so different from the original? The first one was good, not spectacular. I don't see what the point is making all this fuss about a lousy game.

Re: What's the point?
Uh, let me tell you why:
1) As for Halo not being spectacular, I think 90% of the gaming populace and reviewers out there would disagree with you.
2) Its a big deal because of what a huge success the first one was. Itr not only sold well over a million copies, but was the biggest pusher of consoles that Xbox had, or has had to date. Now Halo 2 seems to be repeating what the first did.
That is why its such a big deal.

Re: What's the point?
Actually i dont think its anywhere near 90%, its mostly just console-only, Xbox gamers. which is understandable.
IMO, the game wasnt spectacular, never did anything that wasnt already done years and years ahead for PC FPS games. its leading the way for FPS games on console, which is why it gets the hype that it does. doesnt matter how far behind pc fps games it is, for console gamers its a big deal. And if they like it, then thats the only reason they need. because they like it.
I personally dont see a lot over the original. but then again i didnt like the original so i cant answer that question. lol.
The popular games people like to fuss over. simple as that really.

I believe pretty much almost every major publication gave it GOTY. Those that didn't give it GOTY still gave it a huge score. It pushed tons of consoles to people who otherwise would not have purchased an Xbox. People are genuinely excited about it because the first was an EXCELLENT GAME. Did it do anything revolutionary? Besides pushing the FPS genre from a niche PC market to a monster seller and icon for gaming, nothing. Everything it did, it did superbly. Complain about the level design all you like, but in the end when you take everything that Halo did right from the frenetic gameplay, immersive presention and environments, incredible score and sound, and intuive controls (rare for a console FPS), level design is a minor issue and one that I never even considered. I was too busy having a blast playing the game.
You can continue to downplay Halo all you like, but just realize that you are in the minority.

The gameplay wasn't all that different from every other FPS I've ever played. Shoot, kill grab weapons. Games need a new direction. Sequels just don't give that. That's why I refuse to play San Andreas after blowing my money on 3 and V.C. The first may have been groundbreaking, but how can you do it again?

Why do you care so much about games being groundbreaking? If its fun, play it. I loved Halo, and if Halo 2 is just "more of the same" I'll love that game too. Its not all that often that a game comes around that is truly a fantastic experience to play, so if they just keep it going I'm happy as Hell.
Expand the story, extend the gameplay a little with new weapons, enemies and vehicles... but don't screw what what everyone loved to begin with. When you start grading sequels on whether or not they've "advanced" enough, you've missed the entire point of playing videogames, IMO.

as i said. it leads the way for console FPS games. but its only towards the middle of the pack for PC. and i didnt say most people didn tlike it. i said i doubt its anywhere near 90% love the game to death like you.
And who said anything about level design? lol all i said was i found it to be an AVERAGE GAME.
hype up halo all you want, just know theres a lot more people that didnt find it anything special then you like to believe.

Re: What's the point?
how isnt it a big deal?
dispite how much you liked Halo as an individual, the game is in the top 5 of sales this gen. many, MANY people really liked the game. the sequel is going to make an impact on the industry...plain and simple. this will gather a TON of new XBox Live users (possibly myself included), influence future console FPS's, and earn a ton of money. Millions are highly anticipating its release.
Do you think Halo is simply a 'quality' title? Good for you, but that doesnt change the fact that it IS a big deal.

Wait...so you played the game, right? I mean, since you know it's a lousy game, surely you have some play experience to support that.

Re: What's the point?
Microsoft/Bungie was trying to create fuss in the first place. They have succeeded.

Re: What's the point?
I enjoyed it. Can't wait for the second one. It's a fun game especially multiplayer and co-op. Is it wrong to be excited about fun???

I agree.
An extremely rushed launch title ended up being one of the (if not the) greatest home console FPSs of all time... how could it NOT get a ton of hype?

Re: What's the point?
wasnt really that rushed. much was already done when they ported what they had over to xbox and finished it up.
but yea. the popular games get the hype. and this one is leading the way for other console fps's to follow.

No, it aggrivates me when people dislike/do not recognize a game solely for reasons that I won't go into on a public forum.

And I disagree, for the exact reasons I stated in my earlier post. And IMO, comparing PC to console is like comparing a squirrel to an asteroid. Its two completely different experiences, and I'm more of a PC gamer than a console gamer. (currently obsessed with Rome: Total War)

I was referring to earlier posts that you have made, and the fact that most "Halo haters" use that as their biggest complaint about the game so that they have something they can harp on. As for it being an average game, from the storyline to the gameplay mechanics to the presentation there is nothing average about Halo even on the PC. The "average" PC FPS is as follows: Run around, pick up ammo for the 1,859 weapons you can carry all at once, shoot crap, follow virtually no story, and get frustrrated to no end due to the majority of the game being purely fast twitch... THAT is the average PC FPS. Now are there exceptions to that rule? Of course there are, like Half-Life. DOOM 3 (just for the story), Clive Barker's Undying and Halo. Once again, calling Halo "average", even on the the PC is inaccurate.

I don't know that. Everyone I have personally talked to who has played the game, every review I have ever read and the millions of fans out there that love the game and have puchased a console just to play the game don't know that either.
Just give credit where credit is due, thats all I ask, and thats something you've never been able to do with Halo. Just remember that being hypercritical of a game universally recognized for excellence does not make your opinion any more valid.
And with that I've said everything on this topic that I intend.

Re: What's the point?
i've given it much credit, besides my opinion, i was never attacking the game at all. I said its the leader amoung console FPS games, i think thats giving it plenty of credit.
And i dont disrespect yours or anyone elses opinion in liking it. We hang and talk to different groups. i only know a couple people that truly like it besies this forum.
my original answer was people make a big deal over it because they like it and thats the only reason they need.
the only point we dissagreed on from the original post is that i certainly dont feel 90% of the gaming world loves the game.
