Going Online
Let me tell you, if you will, a tale of a teenager and his PS2, and a quest for FFXI.
It all began one day at wal mart, when he bought FFXI, a modem adapter, and a keyboard. He dished out a lot of his hard earned cash for this game and all the accessories, but he thought it was worth it.
He took it all home. He was very excited. He got the game started, and began to download the updates, install it, etc. Then, when it started the final downloading process, an error occured. This error occured every time he tried to start his game, and he never got to play.
But, he stilled had the receit. He recalled from memory that a commrade of his had once purchased a DDR dance mat from the same store, and the back arrow and stopped working. The commrade still had the reciet, so he returned the mat, and the store let him exchange it for a video game of equal value.
Now, the lad with the FFXI game wants to return it. He can claim it doesnt work. Because rightfully, it doesnt.
But, the boy questions whether he should also return the keyboard and network adapter. He could still play other game's online, he thinks, but he doesnt know if it's worth it or not.
The boy uses dial up, so he doesnt know how well any PS2 online games will work.
So he decided to seek help, at the local Game Tavern. He requests other's opinions, and he wants to know what are some good online PS2 games out right now, or coming out in the future, that will work on dial up, and run properly.
If the list is promising, and online gaming sounds worth it, and fun, he may keep the network adapter, and only return the HDD. With the returned HDD, he could afford a console game, and a GBA game.
The boy would also like to know if he should return the keyboard or not. Does the keyboard work with any other PS2 online games? Is it worth it?
+rep for any help, especially if it is quick help, because if I return it, I'll be returning it tomorrow, probably before I watch Harry Potter III: Prisoner of Azkaban.

Heh, Vampyr... it's not the game that isn't working, it's your lousy connection! If you can somehow get the updates downloaded, keep the game.
And at the moment I do not know of any online PS2 games that are even worth owning (aside from FFXI, which, I decided that I wasn't going to quit afterall). If you want console online games, get an Xbox w/ Live.

Heh. I know it's my connection. But if I tell the store that it "randomly stops working" what are they gonna do? sit down and play it till something messes up?
I would like an Xbox w/ live, but, unless I'm mistaken, Live only works with broadband connections.
But I still dont know if I should keep the network adapter or not. :\

Re: Going Online
keyboard works with most games. However depending on the price it might not be worth it because ANY usb keyboard works the same for PS2. so just using a $10 PC usb keyboard is perfect like i use

The cheapest one I could find was 30. It made me angry that I couldnt get a cheaper one, because I know that much cheaper ones exist. but oh well.
It turns out that my stupid theatre is holding Shrek 2 over tomorrow. I wont be able to see HP3 until next weekend. *curses*
I have a whole week to decide if I want to keep my Network Adapter or not.

Re: Going Online
IMO a few games worth playing online are ATV offroad fury 2 ( its not great, it gets boring after a while), NHL 2004 , so you can kick the crap out of people you dont know, and finally Fight Night 2004, freakingly awesome game to play online.

NHL 04 sucks online. you cant find anyone who plays at decent settings, they all turn speed up full blast and its lame.
ESPN Hockey is better. servers arent as good as EA's but the people playing play on better settings.

Hey Null, do you think Grand Tourismo 4 and Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal will run good on dial up?
Also, are there any good online shooters currently out for the PS2, or coming out soon?

i dont play console shooters, hate em. lack of control.
Its hard to say how the others will run online. i've never played a console online game with dialup.

Re: Going Online
GT4 might be able to run on dialup if it was just a 1 on 1 dual. Outside of that might be overkill for it.
If you know ANYONE with a high speed connection, tell them you NEED to mooch it for a few hours, since I've seen Square's horrible program that downloads the updates..why they need to unzip it right after downloading that file is beyond me.

because its connecting to a server and not each person. it shouldnt matter whether its all 6 or 1on1.
the server would still send the same amount of info to the dialup user for them to download. However if its syncing and connecting to each player to player it would be differnt.
only online game i've ever played on dialup was Quake 1 for PC back in the day. the only differnce really was that some things didnt count that you thought shoulda. because your connection is slower. so if it looked like i shot someone on my screen, in reality it might not of actually hit them. Didnt make a diff how many people were playing. 1 or 12
but consoles may work differntly and i've never played a console game on dialup.
