No it has nothing to do with the CD system for the NES. Its simply what we are calling a big Nintendo announcement that is suppoused to shock the gaming world. Nobody knows for sure what is will be yet, could be a buyout of a company, could be online plans, could be anything really. All we can really be sure of is that it will big.

I think it's just a tool to build hype over the GCN... but who knows...
The only thing now that could make me faint is Nintendo announceing that they won't make a system after GCN and that they merged with Sony or Microsoft.

thx
I've heard that it was because some NOA lawyer type was going over some contracts and looked at the Playstation contract and thought sony broke off. So then Nintendo would have a lawsuit, and get all the money from sonys playstation. And theres the 7 year thing and this IS the 6th year so Nintendo reaps the benefits.
But that was at gamefaqs.com by a guy with only a mere 11 karma.

Come on now, no company is that stupid.
-EDIT-
Also, Nintendo was the one to break the deal off, not Sony.

Nintendo broke off the deal, because Sony was already working on a console of their own at the time. And that could've been in violation of the contract, you never know.
Of course, I still agree that it's stupid, and the guy on GameFAQs is full of BS.

THey broke the contract because segas genesis add on flopped and tere was no real need for a cd add on for snes. Then sony took this new system code named playstation made some changes and voila! they have their own VG futures!

Uhh... no. That's not how it worked.
Back in the day, Nintendo and Sega discovered a new medium, called the CD-ROM. It really wasn't new, the PC world knew about it, but that's not the point. Consider it the cold war of video games, just like with the space race, and the arms race, they had their own little CD-ROM race. Sega announced that they would put out this great new format. Of course, what most of you don't realize, is that Sega partnered with Sony to make the Sega CD.
So now Nintendo has to catch up, they also chose to partner with Sony for the project. So Nintendo announced the plan at the winter CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in '92. Problem is, by that time Sony was already planning to make a console of their own. So then Nintendo questioned whether they should allowed Sony to help them with the drive. After all, why would you want a new guy to know how to design a video game console?
But Nintendo didn't play nice. They let Sony announce the plans for their new console at the CES, and then, just the next day, turned around and announced they found a new partner for the project, Philips. Ouch.
They didn't copy the system code, and the system would've existed with or without Nintendo. For the record, NEC released the TurboGrafx-CD 2 years before Sega. So neither of them was first with a CD-based console. Nintendo later decided they no longer wanted a CD-ROM drive, and by 1995, Nintendo becomes the only major video game company without a CD-based system.
