Chronicles of Narnia to be Filmed

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Following collaborations on "Holes," "Ghosts of the Abyss" and the upcoming "Around the World in 80 Days," the Walt Disney Co. has struck a deal with Denver billionaire Philip Anschutz' Walden Media to co-finance and distribute "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe."
Budgeted at more than $100 million, according to sources, the film is scheduled to begin shooting in the summer, with "Shrek" director Andrew Adamson at the helm.
The film, the first installment of Walden's "Chronicles of Narnia" franchise based on the series of children's fantasy books by C.S. Lewis, will be released at Christmas 2005 by Walt Disney Pictures. Under the deal, which includes worldwide distribution rights, merchandising and all ancillary rights, Disney retains the option to release future films in the series, Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook said.
It's a very, very ambitious production and one that we believe could be very important to the studio," Cook said. "The story and the characters are so inviting that audiences around the world will be excited for the franchise." Cook said the studio is still "digesting" the deal and that it's too early to talk about the timetable for the production of future installments.
The story of Narnia revolves around the Pevensie siblings -- Lucy, Susan, Edmund and Peter -- who go through a magic wardrobe and enter the world of Narnia, a once peaceful land of talking beasts, dwarfs and giants that has since become frozen by the evil White Witch. The four children then help the lion Aslan break the witch's spell.
Ann Peacock wrote the first draft of the script, with revisions by Adamson and Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
" 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' has many fantasy elements," Walden Media CEO Cary Granat said. "It is a film that has unbelievably great scenes for families, with four kids who leave a world consumed by war that they have no control over only to enter a world where a war is raging in which their actions are crucial to the outcome. It says a lot about empowerment and fractured families coming together."
Said Adamson: " 'The Chronicles of Narnia' were an important part of my childhood, just as they are to millions of fans around the world. I hope to bring to the screen a movie that is as real to the audience as Narnia was to me as a child."
Lewis launched the series in 1950 with "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" and followed it up with the prequel "The Magician's Nephew" and the sequels "The Horse and His Boy," "Prince Caspian," "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader," "The Silver Chair" and "The Last Battle."

I never read the books, should I just wait for the movie or read the books first?

Everyone always gets their post counts up do high. I've been here since September of 2002, and I still don't have 500 posts, not that I mind. I just don't see how all of you can post so much.

This is a substitute for a conventional social life. I say conventional because socialization through the internet is becoming more popular and for some it's a primary social venue. Psychologists are accepting it also. No longer is it deemed to be the trait of just a lonely outcast, it's now just another form of sociality.

Well, I agree with that, but I find socializing on the internet easier through instant messaging. I'm just pointing out that I can't post 1000s of posts in a forum, because it takes time to get that much, depending on if they were quality posts.

read the books. I've read every single one of them, and they are awesome. They are very easy to read, and extremely interesting. They arent too long either. Go to your nearest book store, and get "The Magicians Nephew". Read it. Then get the rest of the books in chronological order.
And about the movie...isnt there already movies based on these books?

Re: Chronicles of Narnia to be Filmed
1) I posted that there were going to be Narnia movies, like, a year or two ago.
2) There were already Narnia movies... kind of. They were British TV movies (I think). You can rent them at Blockbuster...
3) Read the books first. Always read the books first.
4) If he hadn't done Mufasa, James Earl Jones would be great as Aslan.

I read the books a long long time ago. I barely remember what they are about.

I don't really know much about the Chronicles but what does the fact that he did Mufasa have to do with him being good for Aslan? I mean, why can't he have done both?

Re: Chronicles of Narnia to be Filmed
Well... Aslan is a lion as well. It would just seem like kind of a rip off. He could do both, but I doubt he'd be cast as him for that reason.

Well, the elementary school I attended had the first book on film...because I remember I loved the movie, and I watched it over and over.
I also watched the first movie on TV a coupel times, only it was a cartoon. I'm not sure if it was an adapted television series or not, I just remember watching the movie.

Re: Chronicles of Narnia to be Filmed
There's a rumor that Nicole Kidman might be playing the White Witch, Jadis, in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
Nicole Kidman as the White Witch?
I personally think that Kidman could do verl well as the White Witch. She could get that beautifully evil type thing, I think.

I think she would be an awesome white with too.
I hope this rumor is true. And now that we are seeing rumors of a possible cast, who you you guys like to see play each character? I'm not sure who I want...I'll think about it, and type up a list later.

Re: Chronicles of Narnia to be Filmed
Well, the only ones who are of real importance in The Lion, etc. are the Pevensie children, the White Witch, and Aslan. Professor Kirke I guess too...
The children will probably be unknowns; I hope so anyway. There are very few child stars I would like to see in this movie...
Like I said, James Earl Jones would be great as Aslan, though I doubt it will happen. Maybe...maybe not...
Nicole Kidman is a good choice for the White Witch...
So...
