The fact that PSOne is selling that many consoles boggles my mind... And yeah, Xbox sales are funny in Japan.

Many people are probably buying PSX's for either collection purposes, or just to catch up on some old games (if they havent already got a ps2, that is....or at least I think so)..

it should be selling better considering Nintendo has monopolized the handheld market

That isn't entirely true actually. Say if Nintendo had a complete, 100% monopoly of the handheld market, all the people that bought the WS (C&C) + GBC would buy the GBA..:

221,663 + 107,649 + 3,366,723 = 3,696,095...

That still falls short of the total number of PS2's sold.

And to think, not all those people are hardcore gamers. The casual gamers are the majority and the tell which passes and which fails. Us hardcorers just just enjoy the damn games and watch the market spin around. I hate numbers. I hate them with a passion.

Nintendo has a 98% hold. Close enough. GBA has already began to surpass PS2 in units per week in most regions if not all. I expect it will beat PS2 this year, what with GBASP and all. In Japan it was largely do to pokemon. If pokemon is a success in the US again, then it will see a similar outcome.

Not that it matters, cause GBA isnt really competing with PS2...

That just means that less people have GameBoys than consoles. Go figure, how many ppl do you know that have a console? How many with a handheld?? Ah eh?

I have 7 cousins who own handhelds...3 of my friends own GBAs...and I've seen plenty of people walking around with GBAs...

2 cousins have consoles...1 uncle...*thinks* and 4 friends.

but whatever...it doesn't matter, more consoles sell than handhelds...but the PS2 has MUCH more competition than the GBA, therefore I think the PS2's sales are more impressive

It's true what you say, that the PS2 is selling phenominally. But look at it from this perspective. Sony hasn't monopolised the home console market, if they did, they would get:

3,732,020 + 1,034,484 + 327,699 + 248.260 = 5,387, 463 units for the PS2.

Yet, even without totally monopolising the home console market, the PS2 still manages to outsell all the sales of the hanhelds put together. So it's pretty unfair to say the GBA should be selling more (in total) than the PS2, when there simply aren't enough people interested in handhelds as a whole to even outsell the PS2.

But as we speak, the GBA is indeed outselling the PS2 on a week to week basis (for how long? Will it continue?). I think Pokemon has acted as some sort of catalyst, and brining in those extra consumers.

Yeah, more people just want a PS2 then a handheld. But GBA doent have to prove itself, everyone knows its number 1, and by a huge margin.
