Default Something about Metriod gameplay mechanics...

Well Metriod is a very promising game, but the question is will it make the tranzition fro 2d to 3d without losing it's appeal and beauty.

I've seen the trailer and the levels looks stunning (not graphicly) but the atmosphere and design is well made.

But when I started reading about the way you control the game, I found a load of serious problems.

1. You can look up or down ONLY when you are standing.
2.You have an autoaim button that is not even optional, it's just there and you can do anything about it. That means when you see an enemy you just stand therem press the autoaim button and shoot. WHERE IS THE STRAFING, CROUCH and tactics part of the game??
3. You can shoot and auto aim only while standing.

Seriously how can those idea fit into a FPS??

Now before Anargist comes and tells me Metriod is good because it's Metriod... I'd like you to explain to me how this works, or maybe I simply don't understand the play mechanics. But something seems seriously wrong.

Firstly, before you read my post, cube.ign.com explain these parts of the game in detail, it will really help you with what you are looking for.

Just to summarise, Metroid isn't an FPS, it's an FPA, hence it the gameplay mechanics aren't mainly based around shooting. If you played the first metroid, I am sure you would know thaat aiming you shots wasn't really that hard. So in other words, this will make the transition from the 2d, to 3d easier.

If you want to know more about the controlls, and strafing, then head on over to cube.ign.com .

Who's Anargist?

You don't get it. IT'S METROID SO IT'S GOOD!!!

No really, that's not my style, I was worried about Metroid too.

As far as I know, there is a strafe button... dunno which one, perhaps it's the same one as the auto-aim one.

I was expecting a Golden Eye control scheme... but they're using the C-stick for other things.

I do know that everybody loved the game, so I guess it will be ok...

Oh, just remembered about strafing. If there is a target, you tap the L button, and you can then strafe around your target. If there is no target, you just hold on to the L button and you can strafe to your hearts contempt .

Ohh... but I thought they completely changed the phylosophy of the game while making go from 2d to 3d. That's actually good, since it's sticking to it's old style gameplay.

Shadow, just an FYI.

Its "heart's content" not "contempt"

You basically said that you hated strafing in your post.

Ah yes, a slip in my vocabulary . I tend to talk while I type, and I must have said contempt for some odd reason...

Read this

The control differences between Metroid Prime and, say, the average first-person shooter, become more apparent through the use of Samus's visor modes. Using the D-Pad, players can toggle two known visor styles -- combat and scan. When Samus is in Combat mode, she can lock onto enemies by pressing the L button, and then blast away while strafing around them (or even dodging by pressing the B button). Pressing L in certain areas will also trigger the character's grapple beam, which can be used to swing across chasms and other dangerous areas. It's possible to swing from beam spot to spot by merely pressing the L button -- a kind of Spider-Man meets space, for players. Using the analog stick, gamers can even look at Samus's grapple beam as she swings about, which of course is impressive.

To get a better idea download the image of the controller below. It shows what buttons do what.

For some odd reason, I think they should switch A and B around. Jumping (at least for me) seems more fitting with A. Damn SSB(M)

Played it at E3 and you are right... it’s incredibly simple. It's also slow, unresponsive at times, and Samus’s vertical has been reduced to about 6 inches. But doesn't it look pretty?

I think that if they speed things up a little it could be ok. The demo was still fun even though it was simple. I think it will be a fun game but nothing revolutionary in terms of the fps genre. They said there is more of an emphasis on exploration and even though the demo stage didn't really show it I'm sure the final product will reflect this.

But don't tell this to any fanboys. Just nod your head and agree that it will be the second coming of God.

EDIT: oh yes and you can strafe by auto aiming at nothing... but its not a circle strafe.

Because it's a FPA. Have you ever played the previous Metroids?? Perhaps you can understand that it's more important to get the atmosphere and stuff right instead of making a total new game with totally new mechanics and stuff. It's a sequel to Metroid.

Oh geeze you actually buy Nintendo's BS PR? Nintendo tried to make Pikmin its own genre too but it doesn't change the fact that it was a 3D RTS. I mean whats next? Calling Mario Sunshine an Hydrolic Platformer?

Its a FPS without a shadow of a doubt. Thats why the main button fires. And yes I have played Metroid before. It did feel like Metroid to an alarming exstent, besides the ability to jump. But that doesnt change the fact that its a FPS .

BTW I'm not trying to bash the game because it was one of the most fun at E3. I'm just saying that the controls were really simple and lacked any need for any true skill like the original poster said. There weren't obstacles to hide behind in most cases. You just clicked and destroyed by shooting a gun as fast as you can. I guess that's why Retro isnt putting multiplayer in, after all, what fun would it be to see who can press fire the fastest.

They could've just made different levels just for multi play, ya know

Personally, I'm not too hyped about Metriod... I don't KNOW if it will be great or crap, but from what I have read, nothing about it interests me.

If I buy a FPS (or first person adventure ) this year, I'll get timesplitters or Doom
