Shooters Better on the Wii
According to IGN anyhow.
http://wii.ign.com/articles/108/1083154p1.html
Quote:
In Call of Duty 3 you held the remote and nunchuk up and made rowing gestures to paddle across a besieged river. In Red Steel 2, you twist the Wii remote to hack old-fashioned safes. In other games, these are automated commands that happen with the press of a button. Making them more physically demanding elicits peals of scorn from experienced gamers because it makes object interaction a part of the main gameplay and is an interactive distraction from the shooting spree.

Oh I expect nothing good from this thread, but should be fun.

Re: Shooters Better on the Wii
Boy, I sure am disappointed that I didnt get to make rowing gestures during that 30 second long part in CoD3.
If I want to make rowing movements, ill go row an actual boat, even though boats with engines are cooler, and instead of turning my hand to unlock a safe, id rather break into a real safe, that would be cool.

Re: Shooters Better on the Wii
Yeah I'm gonna dispute this a bit, although my fun with shooters has been kinda limited because like an idiot I play with the zapper for games that can use it.
I'm down for rail shooters on the Wii but that's because for the most part I can use my Perfect Shot attachments which make it more like a home arcade for me to be honest, but other than that?
..eh

Re: Shooters Better on the Wii
I like Playing FPS's better on the wii but it's not because of the gestures. It's just aiming is easier to me. The gestures can help achieve a sense of immersion in the game which helps, but that's more of a bonus on the side. But there was a time when I actually liked controllers for FPS. I then kept playing them on PC and can't go back to controllers. They don't feel impossible to play, I just feel handicapped while playing with a controller.

Re: Shooters Better on the Wii
Ok, everyone rush and say their preconceived opinion about the matter! Don't bother reading the article, just post!
And.... I don't have time atm to go through the article on a point by point basis. Anyone else up for it?
My personal preconceived opinion is that I agree, I much prefer Wii FPS games to Dual-Analog. I can't stand dual-analog shooters. Third-person shooters are ok, but I think that's because they tend not to focus entirely on shooting. I think I would have skipped Uncharted 1&2 if it was first-person, or if everything else about the game besides shooting wasn't as good as they were.

I just finished reading two chapters of the OS book for that course and am now going to dive into calculus stuff. Nope, I can't be bothered to read that but I want to participate. XD But as lons as we don't stray off topic...
PS: I have played lots of FPS and games on the wii in general to know that the stuff they'll come up with is stuff I already know.

Re: Shooters Better on the Wii
I like shooters on the Wii better only for the point that it reminds me of old school arcade games. Not because the game itself is visually better, or 'more fun'. It's just sort of nostalgic and different because you aim with a physical object, and not a stick under your thumb.

I'm just commenting on what happens in general. I caught myself about to do the same, and realized how mildly absurd it is, but understandable. I did it anyway. What course are you talking about, btw -- did I miss something in your PS3 HDMI-DVI thread?
Interesting opinion from the editorial: He thinks Red Steel is better than Halo etc. And that's not a typo, that is Red Steel 1.

Re: Shooters Better on the Wii
I extremely, extremely agree on the count of Resident Evil 4. It being the superior version of the greatest game made this last decade. Impeccable.
Metroid Prime 3 did exceptionally well too, and I've heard good things about the trilogy version of the games too.

Nah, it's just this class I'm taking about Operating Systems. And I got the PS3 hooked up to my monitor through DVI. I just remembered that my video card brought a DVI-to-HDMI converter but it works the other way around. But I don't have any audio and will have to wait till I get my new tv to get audio out from it.

Re: Shooters Better on the Wii
The Metroid Prime Trilogy was not only a good deal, but it played fantastically, but I can't say the same for Medal of Honor Heroes 2, or Call of Duty 4 on the Wii. The controls were very customizable sure, but I don't think it had the polish that Nintendo gave to MPT. It just felt different and smoother for me, I don't know why.
And GOD yes for the Wii edition of RE4, it's partially why I'm hoping that the Move can add some more fun for RE5. I picked up Gold edition so I could get it as soon as I could.

Re: Shooters Better on the Wii
I read half of the article and I don't really agree with it so far.
I agree with his conclusion, but not with his reasoning. For me FP Wii games are fun and immersing, but I especially like how easy it is to look/move around. Playing MP3 feels so good, probably even better than on PC.
I could do without all the movement-based actions. Opening a door with a motion? That often takes too long. And when the motion control is imperfect, it only distracts me.
I'd really like to see how the next gen will combine HD with motion control.
