Spring Heeled Jack
Quote:
Spring Heeled Jack was described by people claiming to have seen him as having a terrifying and frightful appearance, with diabolical physiognomy that included clawed hands and eyes that "resembled red balls of fire". One report claimed that, beneath a black cloak, he wore a helmet and a tight-fitting white garment like an "oilskin".

Re: Griffin vs. Spring Heeled Jack
I'm torn. I really like Spring Heeled Jack...but I wouldn't mind having a griffin to ride.

A man who dresses up in a costume and strikes fear into people...
Don't know why, but drawn to that.

Re: Griffin vs. Spring Heeled Jack
Well, we were staying in this hotel in Leeds, and there was this picture of a griffin with a long description about it underneath. The description led us to believe that the city of Leeds was somehow involved in the invention of the Griffin as a creature and that it was the city's mascot or something.
Anyway, during a break in our set that night, we brought up this "fact" up as stage banter. The response was pretty much silence. The crowd had no idea what the hell we were talking about and it was super awkward. I mean, our stage banter usually is kind of awkward anyway, but this was pretty bad.
So it turns out that the Griffin just happened to be part of the hotel chain's history, but nothing to do with the city of Leeds. Then, the next time we played Leeds, a few fans playfully made the above sign to belittle our ignorance of their city and facts about the griffin. It's pretty funny looking back on it, and those fans deserve a pat on the back for making fun of us.

When witty, unscripted banter goes wrong.
News at 11.
But alas, you tried and now you have a legacy there.

Re: Griffin vs. Spring Heeled Jack
Ah. Pretty funny. The googly-eye fedora combo is perfection. At ours the banter was about Stevia and (I forgot but BaB of course reminded me) The Dark Knight.

Ah yeah! I distinctly remember the Stevia banter. I think I had something to do with that because I think it was only being sold in NY at the time and I'm a beverage/sweetener hobbyist...

Re: Griffin vs. Spring Heeled Jack
The banter in Amsterdam was about... the weird sounds that Germy likes to make on his keyboard. And about how they came up with Alphabetical Order in Amsterdam. We should have cheered for that, but I don't think we did...
Anyway, Griffin, because I have never heard of a Spring Heeled Jack.
