Default Wii Storage Solution

After more than a year of complaining and Nintendo repeatedly saying it was only a problem for the hardcore and geeks, it has finally been announced that you will be able to play your VC games from SD cards.

Quote:
Finally. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has just announced that, beginning in Spring 2009 (at least for Japan), Nintendo Wii owners will be able to download software directly to an SD card. "We have to address the console's insufficient memory storage," said Iwata, speaking at today's Nintendo Fall Press Conference. This obviously applies only to WiiWare and Virtual Console games, but hey, since they were the things clogging up your memory in the first place, it's hard to see this as anything other than good news. Not perfect news, but still, better than silence.

Personally, this is quite disappointing to me. I am glad they've acknowledged the problem and provided a solution. But of all of the possible ways they could have provided more storage, they chose the most expensive and least convenient. The biggest inconvenience of which is that the Wii doesn't support SD cards larger than 2GB. USB mass storage is already unlocked through homebrew (albeit only at USB 1.1, since that's the type of controller Nintendo provided), and there's really no excuse for not providing it standard.

Regardless, it looks like compulsive VC game buyers will have a slightly better selection of Wii games at any one time.

2 GB is a decent start, but my biggest problem is... your storage solution is something that is included in the system, but just hasn't been unlocked yet?

I've had a 2GB SD card for my Wii since launch and all it does it hold music for Excite Truck and some photos.

Hold your horses.

You can now "download directly to an SD card." It doesn't say you can play software from the SD card.

It's what we all hope. It's what makes sense. But it's not what they're saying at the moment.

Why would you download to your SD card if you can't play it? It's not like you download a game without the intention of playing it really soon. And besides, copying stuff to the SD card was already possible.

This isn't even an announcment.

Attention: We have now started delivering cake to your neighbours living in a mobile home. You can go pick this cake up there, but you can't eat it until you get back to your house. Oh, and make sure you don't have too much cake in your house in the first place.
