I don't know looking at the release for the rest of the year or even into next year. While there are a few announced there does not seem to be a huge influx of RPGs. The same could be said for pure platformers but those have been dead for a while.

Why are these genres dying off? Or has the high cost of development and the time needed for an RPG just slowed the start in this generation?

Also what other genres do you notice on the decline? Which do you want to return to their former glory?

I want 2D side-scrollers to make a comeback. There's just something to be said for a good, old-fashioned video game.

I don't normally notice if any genre is being under represented mainly because I don't focus on any certain genre.

Usually I'm playing a game and by the time I finish it, there has already been a new game that I want to play so I rarely complain that they are making enough of X kind of game.

Who cares if there were only 6 RPGs released this year when realistically, you'll probably play only 1 or 2 of them? Of course, maybe other people play a lot more games than I...

There are a few RPG's on the horizon, namely the new Star Ocean. The DS seems to see a lot of RPG action. I think turn based RPG's just feel dated now days, so you don't see a lot of traditional ones, and I guess non-turn based ones are harder to make. And gamers are really starting to demand more from these games. We don't like it anymore when you equip a new armor and it doesn't change the appearance of your character (Final Fantasy). And I think a lot of the RPG crowd has been absorbed into MMO's, like WoW.

Personally, I have become the kind of person who enjoys instant gratification games more (with a few exceptions, like Pokemon). If I want to read a book, I will read a book. If I want a really in depth RPG that will absorb me totally, I'll play an Iron Realms game. I don't have the patience or time to play long RPG games.

I love action/adventure/platforming games, like Ratchet and Clank, and Castlevania for the DS/GBA, or RPG's in the vein of Kingdom Hearts.

I'd like the space-dogfighter genre to make a comeback. And adventure games to be as popular as they once were.

Quite a fantastic game.

I did beat it on easy. Though I couldn't get very far on normal.

I had to study easy

in my case, easy was a breeze, mostly cus you get so many lives BUT, i wasnt able to beat normal until i finally tried easy (started off on normal), and after eleventy billion tries and pretty much memorizing the game managed to beat the game on hard (doing all the challenges first prepped me for hard)

Yeah, the challenges were quite fun as well.

I need to go back to that game and beat it on hard so that I can get the actual ending

For this generation's home consoles (Ps3/360/Wii) there's barely any RPGs. Its interesting because RPGs do sell a lot, there's a whole crowd of people who enjoy these epic games that are out of luck so far. Make sme wonder how something like FFXIII will drive sales.

I think the only thing that is selling FFXIII is the fast-paced gameplay stuff that we've seen in videos past and I know a lot of people want to see Crystal Tools implemented for real.

Most of the crap we've seen for FFXIII has been pre-rendered.

There are a couple of Tales games coming out, they look pretty good. Eternal Sonata was decent as well.

Actually, I could be completely wrong, but outside of Final Fantasy and the Kingdom Heart franchise.

I always assumed RPGs in the West at least didn't sell as well as many genres. Now Japan is a completely different subject.

Also, I didn't say there was no RPGs coming out. Just that compared to generation past there seems to be a slow start for the build up. We do have a ton of Tales games, how many Final Fantasy 13s they can pimp out, MS is trying with their franchises and stuff like that.
