Default Vampyr's Blog : June 8th. Dr. Royal

Doctor Pepper + Crown Royal = great.

I'm posting this on a Sunday, but since it details the previous week of gaming, I'm using June 8th as the start date.

Not a lot of collective gaming got done this week, as I didn't have a lot of time, and I actually have too many games that I want to play. This past Wednesday was my 21st birthday, so I've enjoyed getting a few more games to play. Quick list of what I've played this week, and how I enjoyed them.

The World Ends With You: Actually not my game, it's my girlfriends, but I'm going to give it a run through. It's awesome playing a modern times based RPG from Square Enix. The art and story concept of a "game" is pretty awesome and intriguing to me (sort of reminds me of the Beast From the East book by R.L. Stine). I'm having some trouble getting used to the battle system, though. I'm just got very good with the stylus yet, it's hard for me to use it accurately, and trying to manage battles on two screens is rather difficult.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village: Also my girlfriends game. Enjoyable, and I'm pretty good at solving the riddles (you just have to ask yourself: "What are they trying to hide in this puzzle") but I'm not a big fan of games of this genre, ones like Brain Age. It's not that I like mindless games that don't make you think, but as a computer programmer I work all day with logic and numbers. I don't want to come home and do the same kind of puzzles. Zelda puzzles are great though.

Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, 3: Just got this collection yesterday. My girlfriends mom bought it for me for my birthday. I've only ever played/beaten 3 before, so it's going to be fun to experience the others and learn more of the story.

Castlevania : Portrait of Ruin: Very fun game. The handheld Castlevanias are the best. Amazing combination of 2D and 3D backgrounds, and beautiful to awe inspiring horrific enemies to fight. I'm not a fan of the new style anime art used in the story sequences though. Gameplay is classic Castlevania, with a twist of having two characters to use. I'm not exceptionally fond of that, but it's all right. The soul capture system is as good as ever, and the mixed in RPG elements work very well, along with the huge amount of weapons to collect. The currency system seems a bit odd though. The game gives you a ton of gold, and you can essentially leave an enter a room, breaking things and getting tons of gold, but the items are very very expensive.

Mario Kart DS: Playing online using the new Linksys router I got (which was very easy to flash the firmware to Tomato, essentially making my $60 router a $600 router) is pure awesomeness. Not much else to say.

I think that's all I've played this week.

Coming next week: Possibly beating Castlevania, a return to Pokemon, and my experiences with the MGS series.

Oh man, after reading that, I immediately looked up Tomato. I have the right model number (Linksys WRT54GS) but the wrong version number (v6).

I hope they can make it work with verions 5 and above soon!

Portrait of Ruin is a pretty sweet game. I never got around to beating it though. I got VERY close to the end though.

I could never get into the switching characters thing though. I tend to just use the one.

I thought this blog would be about how a loyal gamer you are. I know I am... I've stuck with Nintendo through all the bad years. Same with a lot of other stuff.

Use this one instead:

It looks like they have it working with your model and version:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices

It essentially does the same thing as Tomato, and does just as good a job at it. A guy I know at work uses that firmware. I chose Tomato because I like the color scheme and name of it.

@Angrist: I'm pretty loyal to Nintendo myself, but I'm not above buying another system and enjoying it if there are enough good games for it. I always buy the Nintendo system first, because they always produce the titles and games I want, but I usually do get at least one other system, usually both. I'm loyal to the art and experience of video games, not a particular maker.

@Swan: Yeah, I usually just play as the guy, unless the girl is obviously better for the situation. I just can't get used to switching back and forth. The system of doing it is a tad awkward.
