What's a 10 game for you?
I honestly don't have the time to post up my thoughts, only that a 10/10 pushes a generation to new heights while still remaining fun AND immersive. BaB seems to think there will NEVER be a 10 game.
What do you think?

Re: What's a 10 game for you?
O just throw it out there like I have no reason for there being a 10 game.
And I don't want to use the term "perfect" but in my opinion a 10 game is a game so damn refined and good that you can't imagine anything coming after it and improving it.
I know that sounds like it needs to be perfect, but it doesn't just special.

Re: What's a 10 game for you?
A perfect 10 for me would be entirely based on fun factor probably.
If the game is fun, if its made in a way that makes me want to power on the console again and again, then I think it can be considered successful.
Nowadays, for me personally, that would be based on the multiplayer experience. Cause I enjoy playing games more with other people than just by myself.
The level of artistic and technical detail put into GTA-4 to make Liberty City so alive and detailed deserves recognition. But if a player experiences even the most remote notion of repetitiveness in the missions as I've heard from some critics here, then that alone should automatically disqualify it from achieving a 10 score.
The fact is, a 10 has different criteria for everyone.
For example, I would probably give WarCraft 3 a 10 because of how much I enjoyed it. I loved playing online against other people and I probably did that for a good 2.5-3 years.
My friend at school feels the same about Call of Duty 4. He plays online every night. So he'd probably give the game a 10.

Re: What's a 10 game for you?
It needs to innovate and be a very polished, fun game. Oh yeah, push the limits of what's possible.
Examples:
Zelda Twilight Princess is polished and fun, but it doesn't innovate enough. Could have been so much more. So it's a 9 game.
Brain Training is very innovative, but it's not that much fun. So an 8 or 9.
Super Mario Galaxy is very polished, incredibly fun, but it's not a very revolutionary game. 9.5
Mario 64 and Zelda Ocarina of Time were both very fun, beautiful games that innovated and pushed the limits of what was possible. Both 10 games.

The prefection of design and programming with the technology available.
Thats a 10/10 to me? Is it attainable? Probably not, but I think thats a good thing.
Or to use a better word...

Zelda: Ocarina of Time
and probably Chrono Trigger.
Pinnacles of their respective genres. Most games that follow are merely upgrades of what was once a breakthrough in both design and technology.

Re: What's a 10 game for you?
Any game?
I'd say for me, personally, these games would get a perfect 10:
Grand Theft Auto 4
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Final Fantasy 7
Chrono Trigger
Any of the Mario Party games.
OoT.
I also don't think with gaming that a 10/10 is "perfect" or "flawless".
It's obviously subjective, and it always will be.
A 10/10 on a test is different because everyone gets the same questions and answers, but with gaming there are too many variables to even count.
Despite the fact that the entire rating system is a giant hand-job to every game company which is why no game really gets less than a 6.

I don't tend to fight people on their opinions much.
But Mario Party?

I just put that there to see how long it would take someone to point it out.

Re: What's a 10 game for you?
Yeah, I mean, a 10 is simply the highest score you can give something, just because that's how most scoring systems work, but it doesn't mean the game is perfect...So I don't have a problem with giving games a 10, and any flaws are usually pointed out within the text of reviews anyway, and it's more important to look there than the number at the end anyway.

Re: What's a 10 game for you?
My low effort response would be a 10 out of 10 game would be a game that is polished and developed to a point where you won't encounter any glitches or weird bugs during extensive gameplay, the gameplay is both innovative and fun, the game offers multiple levels of depth, the gameplay is addicting and has replayability, the graphics both excel in art style and pixels, and game has a moody soundtrack and great sound.
How many 10 out of 10 games have I played? By my count, two. One is Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and the other is the original Half-Life. I believe both games would qualify as 10 out of 10 affairs, and that they are pretty much perfect in every aspect, or at least they were when they came out. I don't really expect to be able to defend my claim. 100% is an achievable number, so, I think to some extent, a 10 out of 10 should be achievable for a game. But it has to be really really really good. I think stuff like glitches can be forgiven as those can be patched up.
But this review thing becomes infinitely complicated. There are so many factors, like, should online gameplay count towards the game's review. Should mods (like counter-strike) count towards the review. Should a game like Bioshock, a first person shooter, be penalized for having week RPG elements, even though it is a first person shooter. Should a game lose points if it doesn't stand the test of time? Can we review a game two years after it comes out.
I've taken some pretty heavy English-Cinema classes. Cinema is actually a very highly respected medium. It's also extremely complex. At some point, I think video games will be respected just as much as movies. And, when that time comes, I anticipate that there will be some good insight into this complex subject.
In the meantime, I rely on the number rating system as a guideline, just as I do for movies. I'd much rather read a review though.
Yahtzee has the right idea. He points out game's flaws, but a lot of the flaws are subjective to him, so by listening to his reviews he offers a pretty good insight into why you would or would not like a game. You don't have to agree with him; and I think that's what he understand better than IGN or these other huge game review sites. I think a lot of reviewers caters their game review to the game's target audience.

Re: What's a 10 game for you?
A 10 for me is a game that keeps me coming back multiple times to play it again and again. It doesn't have to be perfect, technically speaking, but it has to have very solid gameplay mechanics.
What games are 10s for me? Easy.
Chrono Trigger. Ocarina of Time. Oblivion.
Three games that I have come back to over and over again. I have beaten each of these games at least 3 times. Even if I'm fighting the same people and doing the same things, the games are so fun and I have felt the need to play them again, and again...and again. One big thing is that they are complex, yet simple to play.
I do have a couple games that come close to 10s and I feel bad for not giving them 10s because I've played them so much: Half Life 2, RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, Super Metroid.
