Storage?
Maybe I missed this in a press release somewhere, but where are your Virtual Console downloads going to be stored? Is there a HD in Wii?

Re: Storage?
No, it's been public for a while: 512MB of flash memory built in for whatever you download, plus you can add SD cards for more memory. There are USB ports however, so I suspect Nintendo will eventually release a Hard Drive or license 3'rd parties to do so.

Re: Storage?
I think they've confirmed that any mass USB storage device will work. I have an 80 gig here raring to go.

Re: Storage?
Cool. How big would your average N64 game be though?

Not too big. 32/64/128/256/a few 512s megabits would be significantly smaller in megabytes. But I am too lazy to do the math. Basically, 8 bits in a byte.

Re: Storage?
wonder how the actual files are made, what kinda file they are.
Wonder if people will eventually be able to get the rom files from the pc to work on it. actually i bet they will be able to eventually.

Re: Storage?
THey'll have some way to keep you from trading the files. I'll be willing to bet that the game "authenticates" itself everytime it starts. IE, I wouldn't be surprised if you can't play a VC game unless you're online.

I'll bet it tries but allows you to play if it can't get a connection. I mean, crap happens, internet goes out or whatever, it'd be pretty aweful if you couldn't play your VC games.
As for N64 games, Resident Evil 2 was the largest ever at around 64MB, Ocarina of Time was around 32MB, but most games are gonna be in the 8MB to 16MB area.

im not talking about trading thier files. and i highly doubt they'll only let you play em when your online. whats more likely is a system like the DRM music files on itunes. that put a digital signature on your file or computer that registers it with that machine. so since each machine has its own identity, the signiture burned into the fire (unchangable) only allows it to play on that system. which is fine.
what im talkin about is im wondering how long it'll be till someone finds a way to play a normal rom file on it. which im gunna say within the first year.

Thats incredible that they fit Ocarina of Time on only 32MB's. Actually, the same goes for all N64 games...

It's namely because they compressed the textures and sound to all hell (same reason the N64 was always criticized for blurry textures).

Re: Storage?
Well, after reading this I went out and bought a 1GB flash drive and 300GB external hard drive so I guess I'm good to go. I didn't want to wait because I know these will all be sold out when Wii debuts.

Sometimes I seriously can't tell if your joking or not
The really incredible thing is how they fit Super Mario 64 on 8 MBs..
I think somebody'll make a ROM to VC converter. All hell will break loose. And Nintendo will most likely have a firmware updating system similar to the PSP.

Re: Storage?
If there's one company that I will never try to screw over, it's Nintendo. I want them around for as long as possible.
But yeah, I have my flash drives and 250gb external harddrive ready should I run out of space on the embedded RAM.
