You are correct, sir. This game has a high level of micromanagement, but it is turn-based. Most reviers point out that this the management portion of the game ould stand alone if need be, and is most comparable to the Civilization series
In fact, the management of this game is being turned way up from earlier Total War games.
Religion is back and bigger than ever. You will be able to, and will need to, send out priests, alims, assassins, spies, inquisitions... and yes... CRUSADES and JIHADS... if you expect to do well in this game.
But for the love coems with the real time battles. Just war on a massive scale, and with the later time period, there will be cannon fire and muskets.
There will be blood by the gallon and I will relish in my coming baptismal. Well, once I build my new friggin' PC that will be able to run this monster.
