Default President Addresses House Republicans

Surprised there was no thread on the SOTU, but the President followed that up yesterday by having a Q and A with House Republicans.

It was a rather nice setup, and curious why this hadn't been done more before, and if it will become a thing with politics being so televised these days anyhow.

I saw a few pundits were comparing this to the Prime Minister's questions, which is a ridiculous comparison.

He performed better during this Q&A than during the State of the Union, but I still feel underwhelmed by his presidency thus far.

Always fun to look at these.

The situation Obama was left with was unfortunate, but he still hasn't given me a reason to vote for him again yet.

Has he given you reasons not to?

Yes. His evolution from being a progressive to now being center-right is very annoying. I'm not a fan of weakness, nor do I enjoy watching him cave to the right wing on every issue. One of the most telling things in the video Earl posted, is that the healthcare proposal now is similar to what republicans had proposed to Clinton in the 90s.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not even close to being pulled to the other side. I don't like their completly false claims that Obama is not working with them enough. IMO, everything that he has done so far was done to try and get support from the minority party.

Pres. Obama's exchange with the House Republicans reminds us all just how effective a debater he really is. If I have the time, I love to do a communication study on his technique. So far his one big weapon is what I call the "Obama Chuckle", where when faced with a difficult question/challenge he laughs it off before answering. This is effective for two reasons:

1) It non-verbally dismisses the challenge by insinuating it's "silly" enough to garner a laugh.

2) It buys him a few moments to formulate an answer.

He is also very good at turning policy questions into personal questions. Example: When challenged on spending policies, he answered by criticizing the Republicans because some of them had attended ribbon cuttings for spending projects. The challenge and the answer have very little to do with one another, but it was none-the-less effective because it insinuates hypocrisy.

Overall, the Republicans need to learn from the 2008 election and this exchange. Pres. Obama is formidable in a debate regardless of his performance as President. They will need a wordsmith and agile mind of his equal in order to dethrone him in 2012. The only person who comes to mind that has that ability is Newt Gingrich and he is carrying a ton of personal baggage. Perhaps Paul Ryan, but I haven't heard enough from him and he is very young.

I'll reserve comment until I hear the whole thing.

Bond: I'm not familiar with the Prime Minister's questions. I assume you mean Britain, and why is it ridiculous?

Prof. S: About 2012, an article in the current Texas Monthly seems to think the current Texas Governor Rick Perry is going to become president in 2012.

I haven't read the whole thing, but this link has a long preview of the article. http://www.texasmonthly.com/preview/2010-02-01/feature

Have any thoughts on Perry and his chances?

Wow... I'm listening to Pres. Obama speak about his new spending bill, and its amazing to watch their strategy. I'm just not sure that blaming Bush is going to work anymore with the American people, and calling a massive increase ($3.8 Trillion in total I believe) in spending an effort to be fiscally responsible? If they weren't so serious I would think they it was an SNL sketch.

Amazing.

I'd have to see him debate before I could give an opinion. Pres. Obama won the debates without saying much about anything. He is simply a superior verbal athlete. Gov. Perry could be the best candidate of all time, but be a average debater and still lose by 6 million votes.

To me this was the funniest question of the night. But I find it interesting that Obama doesn't push these points at every oppertunity. He even called out fact checkers too, and from what I've found they only seem to agree with him.

It's not Obama's spending that created 80+% of the deficit he has, it was Bush's.
