No HiDef for Revolution
A letter written to Nintendo:
Their response:
Quote:
Hello and thank you for contacting Nintendo,
And, thanks for taking the time to point out what appears to be two contradictory statements. First, it is true that we currently do not plan to support High Definition games for our next generation system, Revolution. Nintendo's focus is not on technology for technology sake. At Nintendo we feel that the key is not how many pixels, polygons or technical acronyms you have, but what you do with them. On the other hand, some games on today's generation of consoles, like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, look great because they are carefully optimized to take advantage of everything today's systems can offer through a standard TV. While it is true games in high definition will be better looking than the same game on standard resolution, this does not mean that high-def games will always look better than standard resolution games.
Nintendo's focus with the Revolution is to create a gaming system that is compact in size with new types of interfaces for controlling games, has fast start-up times, is affordable for everyone, entices new developers with the ease of developing outstanding games, and offers innovative "All-Access Gaming.
Nintendo's All-Access Gaming philosophy covers the spectrum. The next console fits anywhere. It brings together new games and old. It gives people worldwide access through wireless Wi-Fi connections. And it opens the world of video games - to everyone. Software for the new console will even attract people who don't consider themselves players. Adults, kids, men and women around the world will have access to the most popular video game characters, the best game franchises and the most engaging experiences yet developed - only with Nintendo.
We are confident that gamers and non-gamers alike will support our focus on fun and innovation, and we hope you will, too. Once you have a chance to play games on the Revolution, we think you will!
Keep checking our website at www.nintendo.com for the latest on Nintendo games, systems, and promotions. And, while on our site, also check out the My Nintendo program. With this program, not only can you monitor the status of a subscription, part order or repair order, but you can also register your games and systems, and participate in the Nintendo Forums.
Thanks for your email and good luck with all your games!

Re: No HiDef for Revolution
I won't have HDTV for another number of years, so it doesn't affect me, nor do I believe this will be the judging factor by most consumers, but it still would've been better for Nintendo to have this for those that want it.

Re: No HiDef for Revolution
Now the EB employees have another reason to not choose Nintendo anymore *notices thats reason 523 to not buy the Revolution or any other NIntendo product*
I dont care if I dont own an HDTV right now BUT I know I will in the next 5 years or less. I want to know my games will look their best.
If I recall correctly, Nintendo when their component video adapter was still in major production for GC, they said all first party games from now on would support HD then they just all of a sudden shaft the port allowing it.
This is either A) Fake or B) A mis-represented Customer Service Rep. Nintendo wouldnt be so stupid as to alientate itself even more then it already seems to be

Re: No HiDef for Revolution
Wait a second...is this saying that the new console wont even have a component out put (or is it composite, I always get the two confused, im talking about the higher resolution one, of course) Or will they still have resolutions at least as high as the one's supported with the current (well not the new ones I guess) Gamecube's? Because if the latter is true I wont really be that dissapointed....but if we only have the standard Red Yellow White outputs, I will be a little dissapointed. Not that

Re: No HiDef for Revolution
Somehow i think its fake. When has nintendo ever given out news that no one knew about in an email response? come on.
Was the port to plug it into a pc monitor ever confirmed?

Re: No HiDef for Revolution
Wow, you guys are stupid to believe this.
While Nintendo didn't sound too hyped about HD support, they have already mentioned they will have it. Oh, and that's an exec from NOA, not a high-school aged customer-service rep.
Customer Service. Do people not understand what customer service is? It's not PR. Gamers are idiots.

Re: No HiDef for Revolution
True. I just had my thought hit me that they are supporting PC monitors out of the box and well, thats the highest resolution you can go, kinda

Composite = Y/R/W
Component = R/G/B
Component video is just a type of cable. It can still display 480i.
As for monitor support, it will probably support DVI output, which is more for HDTVs than monitors. DVI and HDMI carry a digital signal, where component video outputs digitally, then converts it to analog to send it through the cable, and then converts it back to digital when it reaches the TV. And since HDMI is backwards compatible with DVI, it would support HDMI as well.
