Monogamy
How important to you is monogamy? What are the odds of two people devoting themselves to eachother and no other? Is monogamy required for "True love," or can several people agree to love eachother? Human culture aside, do you believe we were designed to love only one other?

Re: Monogamy
Monogamy is mainly a religious/cultural thing. It's not in our DNA. Men were designed to sleep with many women, and women have biological impulses to cheat. You can't deny it. Religion and culture over the years taught us that it is "right" to only have one lover. But why?
Have you ever thought about Kings and their harems? Kings used to have loads of women just to himself and his genes, because those genes were obviously the "best." They probably were, if he got to be a king. Well, how did he protect this harem? He passed laws for monogamy. That means only one woman to a man. This protected his harem. It all makes sense. Now it has been passed down and literally fed to us through mediums such as Disney movies. We grow up thinking Monogamy is good.
What I do believe now, in modern times, is that a man will devote himself to one women, but will sleep with others if the opportunity arises. But when you get older and it's time to marry, I'll be less prone to doing that.

Re: Monogamy
We have originally been designed for polygamy, but our modern culture makes us monogamistic.

Re: Monogamy
I'm monogamous. For me true love can only be shown to 1 person.

Re: Monogamy
i partially agree wiht polygamy being in our blood....but i guess human beings are born with jealousy pride and seslfishness....i dont think people enjoy sharing things which mean alot to them....i would treat my boyfriend the way i would want to b treated...therefore....monogamy would never b an option for me....when u love someone...u want him/her to feel special ....irreplaceable

Re: Monogamy
I liked lots of different people throughout my life so I think mating with more than one person is my natural instinct.
I like the idea of staying with only one person at a time though.

Re: Monogamy
Well, love is a man made thing, and the topic at hand, or at least regarding Monogamy/Polygamy is love. Both ideas focus on love, and not necessarily on sex.
Taking the moral/religious things out of context, humans have penises and vaginas to reproduce. The whole idea behind attraction is that you reproduce with the person you are attracted to. Reproduction then guarantees that your species will go on. Hormones attract you to the opposite sex so you make babies. That's really the simple science of it all.
Polygamy would never work. We chased those silly Mormons to Utah until they stopped having multiple lovers, and we as a society have shunned it. I won't complain. Along with over-population came disease, and disease leads to death. Nature has a tendency to fix itself, especially over long periods of time. I know people say that humans have screwed the earth over, but if it becomes that bad, we'll just blow ourselves up - problem solved.
So, from a standpoint that neglects morals and religion, I am pro Monogamy, and therefore I'm obviously pro Monogamy from any other moral standpoint.

I kind of agree. I'm 17 years old, and I don't feel like being devoted to any one person. But I think if you truely love someone, you will be with them and only them. I'm not saying that because of religion or culture...I'm saying that because I believe it's part of love. It might be in our blood to be polygamous, but since when have we done what biology says we should? We aren't animals. We are above them for a reason.
But like I said...I'm 17 and until I decide to get married I'll be polygamous, because I see no benefit from not giving in to what my body wants, and what I desire. To say I want to wait until I get married to have sex would be naivity to the extreme. Don't you hate it when people pretend to have morals by saying this? Yet they'll do the most horrible things in the world, but as long as they don't have intercourse they are a good Christain?
I have a rebuttle to your statement, though, Dyne. I agree with it to an extent. I want to have multiple relationships until I decide to get married (or until I fall in love, whichever comes first), but your statement about us obeying our gene's is a little hypocritical.
Our gene's tell us to be polygamous so that we can reproduce with multiple partners and spread our DNA. Our society is so perfectly driven towards this. The stronger, more athletic, more beautiful people tend to get more sex. Their gene's have the opportunity to spread more. A man who isn't completely interested in sex, and has this moral code that tells him to sleep with only one woman, and he actually follows it, than his gene's aren't given the chance to spread. His weakness is supposed to be removed. Because Biology doesn't think a high moral code is a strenght, in this case it doesn't like it. Any man or woman that actually bends to it is successfully removing those defective gene's from the human race.
That's all good, right? Only it doesn't work like that any more. You want to be polygamous until you are older, right? Becuase your gene's tell you to be? You're gene's are also telling you to reproduce them, but out of all your relationships that you have through the years, the multiple woman you might be with, how many of them will you have sex with unprotected? Probably none. You'll be using contraceptives, thus eliminating the purpose of polygamy. You only behave your genes to a certain extent. Sex stopped being about survival a long time ago.
So if you aren't actually going to srpead the gene's, what's the point of being polygamous?
It's like we use them for an excuse to be polygamous. I admit I will be, but not because of morals or biology. But because I don't see any negatives to it. It just pleases me, that's all.

Re: Monogamy
Unfortunately for science, love and emotional attachment almost offset or contradict survival of the fittest.
We watched this movie in Biology called “Gattaca” (Lame DNA pun intended in title), and it foreshadowed a scary possible future were everyone has been genetically altered so when they where born they would be perfect. It was a scary movie, and yet, somehow it doesn’t seem all that unrealistic.

Re: Monogamy
Polygamy may or may not be in our genes *shrugs* I don't dig the whole sleeping around with a lot of people, I guess. I'm monogamous, I am faithful to my girlfriend. I don't get the certain 'instincts' to **** an attractive girl everytime I see one. :P They are attractive, but yeah. That's about it. Just like you can argue that polygamy is in our blood, why can't monogamy be in our blood as well? I believe they both exist within us, people just tend to focus on one or the other more (this is including religion).

Do you masturbate to other females aside from your girlfriend? It's a somewhat subjective question, and the realms of self-pleasure through one's self is blurred between actually going out and nailing someone, but I think the principle is similar enough to justify the idea that we, males, would be poligamists if our moral society would allow us to.

Masturbation has nothing to do with loyality, and therefore is irrelevant. Being attracted to more than one person is unrelated to monogamy. Monogamy is based on love, maturbation is not.
