Default Half-Life 2 Problems

Alright. I'm having some major issues with HL2. Namely, it's the same stuttering bug that many people have been having for a long time. However, I'm confused, because it says on most HL2 news pages that a patch was released to fix the problem (the problem being the fact that the game is loading textures on the fly as opposed to at the beginning of a level - which causes lag if you turn a corner or look somewhere you haven't before).

Anybody have a fix? As far as I can tell, Steam has updated my copy of HL2. The only temporary fix I've gotten so far is to control-alt-delete out of the program and set the task priority to "Below Normal." Don't know why it works, but it does for about an hour.

Thanks.

I recommend re-installing and then downloading the patches again.

Also, with Doom 3, there was a way to download a patch that ripped a lot of the information off of the Doom 3 CD and store it on the PC, this way the game didn't have to load information off the CD during the game. You should see if you can do that for Half-Life 2.

yea you might have to download it manually. and it might then be a command to type it to start it up.
for me tho, i just got the newest version of my sound card drivers and it stoped.

Update all your video and sound drivers.

Drop the sound quality tab to medium if it isn't their already.

Update your bios.

Defrag.

All of these things should help.

Indeed, I've done them all. Defragging helped the most (because that's where the textures are being loaded from), but it's still hanging for more than two seconds at some places. Very frustrating. I just learned that my copy of HL2 isn't updated because it doesn't recognize one of the new commands they implemented with the latest release.

Hmmm...right click Half Life 2 in steam, click properties, and under where it says automatic updates, make sure it says "always keep this game up to date."

If thats good, make sure steam isnt trying to load something in the background while your playing. Just right click on the steam Icon in your system tray, click monitor, and make sure steam isnt updating. Otherwise, im not sure the problem. I was having a little bit of it, not bad really, but STEAM's latest patch from December 22 seemed to help some for me. Now the stuttering is quite rare...not that it was a huge issue to begin with though for me.
