KIDS gets excited over PICTOCHAT
I was in the mall and some kids were chatting with each other side by side with the DS.... it made no sense, whilst I was speaking to a friend on my cell.
This is very funny to me!!!
(Do not mistake this post as a rebuttle to the IGN over MP3's)
Heh...

Re: KIDS gets excited over PICTOCHAT
Yeah...it kind of takes the purpose out of using PICTOCHAT if you're right next to the person that you are conversing with. If they were on oppisite sides of say the food court and direct conversation is impossible, then it is acceptable. But this is an outrage!

Re: KIDS gets excited over PICTOCHAT
Damn kids today and their new fangled gadgets.
I doubt I'll use pictochat and giggle like a little kid. Although its nifty, games are more priority for me. Damn you Nintendo!

Re: KIDS gets excited over PICTOCHAT
You think that's weird? Back when my high school first got wired with e-mail for every student (in my freshman year eight years ago), students would sit in the lab and type e-mails to each other. Some of them would have "Hi, how are you?" "I'm fine" type chats over e-mail while sitting right next to each other.
And some of them would send these e-mails to the whole school even though they were really just talking to each other. Made me want to whip out my knife and take a few fingers (yes, fingersman does inspire me from time to time).
Anyway, newfangled communication fascinates kids. I'll bet that when cell phones started showing up in high schools, bunches of them would SMS while standing next to each other.
But at least PictoChat allows you (theoretically) to convey something that you can't do very well in voice. That is to say sometimes it's easier to just draw rather than describe it in words.

Re: KIDS gets excited over PICTOCHAT
I haven't PictoChatted with anyone yet. My ideal use for it though would be in a classroom with a friend or just in a public venue with a stranger. When it goes online, I'll PictoChat with my friends who are all at different colleges.

Re: KIDS gets excited over PICTOCHAT
if they utilize Pictochat with online functunality, I can see it now:
"good game guys"
"yeah, that was sick"
"OMG I WANT TO SEX YUO UP!" *crappy sketch of b00bies*

Re: KIDS gets excited over PICTOCHAT
Unlike MP3's, I think that this has the possibility of being useful to gaming, especially multiplayer gaming and wireless play, along with just chatting outside of game. Has more to do with everyone being connected and all.
But, I refuse to buy any handheld until I decide which one has better games.

Re: KIDS gets excited over PICTOCHAT
Reply to Xantar: That was probably because they couldn't talk out loud in class... Or maybe they WERE obsessed.
In any case these guys were sending each other pictures using Pictochat and then before sending them they'd show each other ... "Look at what I'm sending you!"
EDIT: ALSO... someone stated, I forget who, that Pictochat is more useful feature than mp3 playback for online multiplayer gaming functions... but why are you comparing those two? PSP also has chat capabilities with usb port to plug in a small keyboard... or a huge one.
Both handhelds have online multiplayer communication abilities... i dunno why you put in Mp3 vs. Pictochat when regarding online communication in gaming... lol

Re: KIDS gets excited over PICTOCHAT
Probably because of the thread title. And people here have compared it before.
Those kids make me laugh.

You know, as I see it.. there's a lot of hot, geeky girls with DSes. Now, when I'm walking around the campus or on the bus, and I have my DS ready to go - this will prove to be great fun.

Thats a pipe dream my friend. Sounds damn good, but just a pipe dream.
As for my opinion of the Ideal use of the Pictochat (besides the obvious Intranet aspects, when they start using them)...I see, for instance, a class field trip. On a crowded, noisy bus, one kid sitting near the front could talk to his friend who got stuck in the back using pictochat.

It wasn't during class, so I guess that means they were obsessed.

I'm not exactly sure what you're getting at, but....the DS has chat capabilities as well as PictoChat. There's a built in microphone you know. But the PSP does not have anything like PictoChat. And I want to see you typing on a keyboard on a handheld.
In any case, I can think of some ways that PictoChat type functionality can accomplish some things that voice chat can't. Just for starters, it allows you to point at things. It's like the function in Warcraft III that lets you mark a particular point on the map. It's much more efficient than, "That point right there. No there. Up a bit. Two steps left from the rock. No, the other rock."

actually they're making a little touch pad for the PSP, there was a picture of a prototype of it a while back. it was clear, had all the letters on it and stuff like a keyboard. but was small and cliped onto the top of the psp. using a touch pen you'd just tap the letters you wanted. no ones saying you HAD to use a big keyboard.
but the usb port does open a world of possibilites. just as it has for PS2. plug keyboards in, mice in (ps2. wouldnt be needed on psp obviously) but also a normal PC USB headset could be plugged in.
not saying its better then having a touch screen, just that you'll be able to do some of the same things on both handhelds.
