Yeah, Link would be cool. I don't know why he wasn't included. You've got tons of missed people that could easily be good characters in Mario Golf. AT LEAST all the characters from SSB:M would work in Mario Golf.
*Edit* I can imagine Mr. Game and Watch using a frying pan for a golf club
