Yes. Thus air units are good to use against chimeras, and they alse happen to be pretty good against frost wyrms which are very slow.
Of course, none of these are quite as good as sorceresses with Polymorph. Man, that spell is fun when you pull it off.

Gargoyles are ok, but practically any ground unit at all that can attack air will destroy them. In the original Warcraft III, I often had a dozen each priests and sorceresses fighting massive groups of gargoyles and wiping them all out with maybe one or two casualties. I didn't even polymorph any of them. Heal was good enough.
Of course, the guy I was up against was a fool who couldn't focus fire, but still, gargoyles aren't very useful against ground units. That's what the frost wyrms are for.
