Default NP Interview about Online Gaming

Nintendo Power: Will Mario Kart be online?

Satoru Iwata: Sadly, we haven't been able to give the Internet connection to it, but what I know is that Mario Kart will be able to be played in LAN with other GameCubes connected. The beta tests of an Internet Compatible Mario Kart have not been good.

NP: Will there be another LAN games as you mentioned?

S. I.: Of course! For now we have other games in test. Remember the development of Mario Kart for GameCube started a while ago and the ability to connect through has just been implemented. These games will have Internet capability, because they are being designed for that.

NP: Do you have the name of these games?
S.I.: I can't give that information, but I can say they will be showed at World smash.

NP: How will the configuration for LAN games be?

S.I.: We have been testing with traditional systems, like having a Nintendo GameCube as server, but this one has overloaded too much to have a stable playability. Maybe, as minimum requeriment to play in LAN, is having an extra GameCube, in order to work as dedicated server, while the others connect to this one through an Ethernet Hub. Obviously, each GameCube will need its own Broadband Adapter.

That is some good info. that I haven't heard before. Iwata kind of contradicts his first statement about Mario Kart not being online. His first question says that its not turning out well and it might not be put in, but in the second question, he says the LAN games will have internet capability. Also, thats interesting that you might need an extra 'Cube just for Lan gaming. But it would make sense because I doubt you can take away so many resources from the 'Cube while playing a game to make sure the connection is running and stable. Hopefully they just make a little thing you buy that is cheap that is its own dedicated server and not have to have 5 or more 'Cubes for a great LAN game.
