As for PS2, there are a couple, but even then, the Squaresoft/Enix payoff didn't work, as they are developing titles for GCN in 2003...MS by far though, has outright paid money for every exclusive they have now minus in-house ones. Hell, even Halo was bought last-minute right before it's completion on the Macintosh in late 2000.

The fact is, Retro and SK were flat bought out by Nintendo. They're first party, but the fact that they're in different countries renders them second parties. It's the same as Rare under Microsoft. The dev house is elsewhere. There's a distinguishable difference between first party and second party. Factor 5 is not Second party, but the real reason they stay is because of Nintendo's support. Factor 5's a really great dev team, but they probably give Nintendo attention first only because of the way they treat them. That's probably also why Capcom's RE series went exclusive. There was probably no money involved, just good business relations.
