i believe (note i had to read about these things in acient history books) that a 56k modem, doesnt mean it connects at 56k.
you look at the icon when you log on, it can be logged on at any speed, be it 14.4, 44.4 is frequent, or 36. etc.
mind you i might have to check with some really old people to check this info out.
