Anyone who said carry a knife or gun should be ashamed. Guns and knives (except for war situations because they're kind of a necessity there) are for cowards and/or people with weak minds. They don't solve the situation, they just start a vicious cycle. People see you with a gun they think "Oh ****, he's got a gun. So if I want to make sure I'm safe, I better buy one too." and you can take it from there what happens again and again.
Xantar's and gekko's suggestions are the best I've heard in this whole topic. But hey some of the others will work too. Here's one that works, act like one crazy son of a b**ch and say things (scream while you're doing it because you have to startle them) that don't make sense like "
insert name here your mother said hello. Run down the street. Billy go get some oranges for what the hell is wrong with you?" See that made absolutely no sense, which should confuse the guy and while he's confused you give him a couple of good shots (not the gun kind
) or run like hell
