Lol, yeah. I have that happen somewhat at my grandma's house(here). My half-brother couldn't get a game to work. And with having XP, I figured I already knew what the answer was. So I just changed the compatible mode to Win. 98 and voila! But yeah, I also too seem like the person thats always called for anything that happens to electronics. But its also good in the process.
