It was called GT2000, but it got delayed to 2001, so the name GT2000 had to go... and to make sure further delays didn't cause more problems they changed the name to GT3.

yes when it was first oficially anounced... it was a PS2 Launch title. (then held back later)
but when rumors were going around. and sony first talked of GT2000, it was lead to believe that it was a PSX title.
