Oh geeze you actually buy Nintendo's BS PR? Nintendo tried to make Pikmin its own genre too but it doesn't change the fact that it was a 3D RTS. I mean whats next? Calling Mario Sunshine an Hydrolic Platformer?
Its a FPS without a shadow of a doubt. Thats why the main button fires. And yes I have played Metroid before. It did feel like Metroid to an alarming exstent, besides the ability to jump. But that doesnt change the fact that its a FPS

BTW I'm not trying to bash the game because it was one of the most fun at E3. I'm just saying that the controls were really simple and lacked any need for any true skill like the original poster said. There weren't obstacles to hide behind in most cases. You just clicked and destroyed by shooting a gun as fast as you can. I guess that's why Retro isnt putting multiplayer in, after all, what fun would it be to see who can press fire the fastest.
