I agree with you to a point, but I also think that this could hurt a game in some ways.

-Feelings of being ripped off. Like I know RDR has plans for DLC that will include 4 player co-op in June, and the first thing that comes to mind is why wasn't that included in the retail version, and do I need to pay more for it?

-Game OF The Year Edition. Similar to the price-collapse model that a lot of gamers follow, why wouldn't a gamer just wait until the edition that comes with all the DLC packed-in for the same low price.

-Userbase splintering. This happens more with DLC in online games, but as you start to release DLC, the pool of people who have X and Y compared to just X or Y is much smaller, which means less likely for you to play with people. And what if your friends don't have.

-Money. And this is the most important reason IMO. I don't want to buy a $60 game, and know that a month after launch I'm gonna need to spend $10 bucks more for the whole story, and then a month after that another 10.
