Swan and I have been playing for a while, the character selection isn't bad, but due to the nature of the story, it can be limited at times, and you get some of them late in the game, which is weird, but the game also encourages a second playthrough.
On the same hand, you can get Carnage as DLC!
Also, they have really simplified the game big time. It looks like each character only has 4 main moves now (before they had a bit more and you could cycle through them), each character only has one alternate costume and it doesn't look like each has a special ability.
And while the Fusion attacks are cool, you soon realize they are pretty much a core group that gets recycled depending on characters.
