Hmm..yeah I'm not an expert but it wouldn't surprise me if Windows did nothing if you just plugged in the adapter. If you plug the mouse into the adapter and it pops up as an unknown device then I'd try finding drivers for the mouse.
Does the mouse have a model number on the bottom or something? It's a Dell roller mouse? Oh man...I haven't used a roller mouse since like middle school. Those thing suck.
You're probably better off investing in an optical mouse anyway. Even a 2 dollar laser mouse is better than a ball mouse.
