I don't think that is 100% true.
The Wii is not too different from the PS3/360. Sure it is not as powerful but the core of the console is pretty much the same.
They differientated themselves by the method of control.
Is an ATM not an ATM anymore because it uses touch screen instead of a numeric pad?
And what is wrong with making yourself different?

Look at the price discrepancies of the consoles. Do you think Porsche competes with Honda? No. They're both vehicle companies, but they sell price differentiated products to different target audiences. Therefore, not competitors.
Price isn't a problem with Nintendo. They have yet to change their price take it up with the other two. Even if that was the case (the 360 is now only 50 bucks more than the Wii for a decent SKU), I don't think the Ps3 or 360 would have sold any better. Maybe the Ps3, but the 360 has seemed to reached the saturation point of its market.

And again, Nintendo games sell to the same audience as any other game. And that's people who enjoy it.

I mean if you want to see the importance of casuals, did you notice that neither GTA IV SKUs are on this month. Two months and GTA is off the list? That really has to be a record for the series. And I think its because without the casual audience that enjoyed it on the Ps2 it has sold to the pretty set hardcore gamers. Which would also explain why there was no hardware bump with its release.

If the Wii isn't effecting that, I would love to see a better explanation.
