We used it at one point to power down the system manually when the unit wouldn't shut down during a loading sequence. It works just like you'd expect.

If the power button won't shut it off, yank the power cord..how hard is that?

As odd as it sounds, having the "brick" externally is a little better. Because it makes the overall
size of the console smaller for those "Home Theaters" and you can hide a power brick in the mess of wires.
