I actually want to get something like this started on a High School level. It would be a great way for students who may not be "physical specimens" to learn how to compete and work as a team in a more cerebral environment that does not include chess.
My choices of games would have to limited to keep excessive violence and obscene content at a minimum (mainly to keep parents happy as I think most teenagers are able to handle M-Rated games), but I think it could actually work. If you could get other schools to follow suit, there could be leagues and championships like any other sport.
You might think no one in charge would ever go for it, but I think as more and more older folks were actually raised on video games, the possiblility is only getting better. Plus, many parents might actually view this as a blessing if their kid spends hours upon ours by himself playing video games. Playing the games ina social setting would be a huge improvement in their minds.
