He could've meant that he was still playing 16-bit games during the "32-bit" era. I know I stuck with my SNES and Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, etc. during the "Playstation/Saturn/Virtual Boy/Jaguar" era because they were unsuccessful for a time.
Only when FF7 became successful and N64 released was the next generation really started.
