Yeah that's the one thing I don't get, but I'm sure it's directors choice.

But by the time Batman Begins comes out, there will have been 8 years between Batman and Robin in this movie, and yet they are restarting the franchise.

Between Superman IV and this one, is closer to 20 years (don't know exact number), and it's even more between Superman II and this one, but it's continuing.
