That we did, of course the comic book had some weird explanation as to why, but eh.

In the cartoon, JJJ's son was coming back from the moon, and his spacecraft crashed on Washington bridge. (I think). Anyway, this symbiotic being came in with him on the ship, it was this black gooey stuff, that we know and love as "venom". SpiderMan came to the rescue, and when he got there, Venom bonded with him. At first Peter liked having the symbiot...he thought it was rather cool. But after a while it began to make him do things he didnt want to do, so he got rid of it, using sound, I think.
Anyway, the symbiot found a new host...Eddie Brock, the news reporter, who blamed Spiderman for loosing his job. Venom and Eddie both had a vendetta against spiderman, so they went after him. Some other stuff happened, but I think Venom/Brock eventually turned out to be one of those bad-good guys, and he even helps spiderman in the Maximum Carnage series.
Carnage on the other hand is Venom's son...I think. Or maybe brother. And the host he chooses is the insane mad man: Cassidy. Cassidy is NOT a good guy, and teams up with Shriek and Dopple-Spidey in the Maximum Carnage series.
Yeah...I like comic books.

Well Venom/Carnage are father/son if you can use those terms. Carnage is a piece of Venom's symbiote broken off or something like that. It choose Cassidey (who in the cartoon shared a ceil next to Eddie Brock) to become Carnage.
