If you don't want to use extensions then:
I use this code so the curser changes to a crosshair when you hover curser over links that open in a new window. Works in Mozilla/Firefox/K-Meleon.
http://texturizer.net/firefox/tips.h..._linkcursornew
Ctrl T opens a new tab
right click on a link and select open in new tab
and my favorite: Middle clicking link opens link in a new tab. make sure button on mouse is set as middle button.
One last thing you could try is in about :config (without space)and set this as true. ( I think, I'm tired >_<)
