Jason, I have some bad news, Justin, I have some good news:
The trick system is totally changed in Avalanche. With R you can spin (and flip), with B,Y and X you grab.
When on the ground, holding L makes you go fasters (like Z in 1080°), when on rails or something L makes you grind and when you land, L gives you a good landing or something. A jumps of course.
If I had to choose between the over-the-top-stunt game SSX or the realistic 1080°, I'd choose 1080°.
I don't like Tony Hawk that much... Tricks are fun, but not as fun as realistic racing.
I played the N64 version last weekend, I gotta admit it's a wonderful game. Except the trick system but that's going to be improved now.
