For the record: I think Star Wars is going to turn out fairly well and Spiderman is going to be slammed critically.
I'm only basing this off trailers, of course, but the initial signs for Spiderman aren't good. They've cast the wrong guy in the title role. I've seen his work before, and he really can't act. Not that you need Oscar worthy material for a comic book movie, but just think what would have happened to X-men without Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan or even without Hugh Jackman. I cared about the characters they portrayed because they had a modicum of depth. The guy who's playing Spiderman is one note and dull-faced. I'm not going to care what happens to him.
Besides that, the CGI sections are too obvious. It just breaks my suspension of disbelief to see Spiderman so obviously not portrayed by an actor when he's swinging around the buildings. And don't say it's only me. Other people have noticed it too. It's not that hard. Just look at the trailers and look at how shiny Spiderman is. Do you really think his suit is supposed to look like that?
At least the script looks okay.
I'm not expecting anything great out of Star Wars, but it has to be better than The Phantom Menace. From what I know, they got rid of Jake Lloyd (young Anakin) and Jar Jar Binks which is a step in the right direction. The special effects look top notch, and hopefully the romance will turn out all right (from what I can tell, it'll be serviceable).
In conclusion, I'm going to see Star Wars and pass on Spiderman. I'm walking into Star Wars with very low expectations, but it's possible that I'll be surprised.
