The train guy and "Merovingian" are quite important. The trainstation is similar to limbo, or purgatory. Neo was sent there for some reason when he manipulated the system and disabled squiddy. By pressuring the Merovingian was Trinity able to free him from the first level of Hell... bwuahahah. *looks around*
And considering how Agent Smith is comparable to the Anti-Christ, I wouldn't say he was ever "over the top". He was one step away from complete control over every body in the Matrix... and nothing was in his way, the Oracle was just
sitting there.
