Sony Loses Patent Suit on Dual Shock Controller

Link.

Yesterday a jury found Sony guilty of violating 16 patent claims of Immersion Corporation, and awarded the company $82 million in damages.
Great news for the Xbox.

I thought Sony made the "Dual shock" controller...Im confused with this.

And hows it good for the Xbox? They had to pay money too.

Did you actually read the article dude? I guess not because it states that Microsoft owns 10% shares in Immersion meaning that any money gained by immersion will also gain microsoft money. If the suit goes through, all PS2's for sale containing a Dual Shock 2 controller will need to be pulled off the shelves and that would be around holiday time which would take Sony out of the competition. You didnt read that?

This is not good. Sony is screwed unless they either pay or come up with something new. Imagine if Sony has to go back to the original controller. Wait, the lawsuit is only for the rumble part right?

It would also be funny if Immersion tried to sue Nintendo and Nintendo did bring up the Rumble Pack patent thing.

This certainly puts an interesting twist on things. With no further comments, I hereby declare Nintendo the winner of the Winter Holiday Video Game Battle.

Well, its just Dual Shock I guess. Not sure about just 1 rumble "thing", since only Sony got sued.

I don't want to sound like I'm bashing nintendo here, but what is there coming out for GCN this holiday season? Besides Metroid Prime 2 I'm not aware of any other major titles releasing before xmas on GCN. Am I missing something? I want Santa to leave me a GCN game under the tree for once.

I'm not sure that's necessarily true. Depending on the terms of the suit, Sony may instead be required to pay royalties to Immersion for the sale of every item containing a Dual Shock 2. That would also really suck but not nearly as much as pulling PS2s off the shelves.

This is nothing........ PS3 will be out soon and if anything they can use their own rumble technology. And if their appeal were to result in an injunction, than Sony just has to make their own rumble technology. Not necesserily the controller.

I wouldn't mind playing without SHOCK for awhile. As long as I have 2 analog sticks.

well then i should get a PS2 before it goes off the shelves shouldn't I?

...this totally sucks for sony! and immersion is a bunch of f*ckin cheap asses...it's not like they were losing money, they just weren't making as much as they would be if sony was liscensed. greedy ass people.
