New Fangled Video Games!
Okay so the other night I was playing the NES Metroid, and is it just me, or have Next Gen Video games somehow killed our gaming experience?
I mean, I used to beat everyone at Contra, ultra High Score style, now if I go back and play it, I suck. Same with Pacman. Oh and let's not forget Mario Bros. It also seems that back then I could play a game, beat it, and still want to play it again the next week. Now if I beat a game once and even think about it again, it's a very lucky game. It just seems like we have lost something in the transition from 8-bit. *shrugs* |

Games now are way easier than they were before, but keep in mind, most games now are played with a goal in mind. You play till you beat the game, then maybe you play through once more. Used to be you'd play just to play, even if the game did have some sort of ending, it's not like there was some great story unfolding, case in point, every nintendo made NES game, or for that matter every nintendo made game period. But there is that X factor of online gaming (or any multiplayer gaming for that matter) where the opponents are going to be much harder than any computer and the only real goal is to enjoy yourself. Even in an MMORPG where you're building up your character, you're mostly in it for the fun, however you may find that. |
Re: New Fangled Video Games!
I used to suck ass at NES games... Now I come in and kick their ass...
But maybe that's just because when I say "Used to", I mean when I was like... 5 or 6... Although one thing I have noticed about older games is when the game is more than just a shoot-em up or something (meaning you actually have to like... get around to certain places, find certain things, etc), there are waaaaay less clues about what to do next than there are in newer games... so I usually give up easily and look at gamefaqs... But games like Mario Bros, Contra... Life force......... Xevious, and Mega Man (especially mega man... I used to struggle through those games and hate them, now I can actually beat them and I realized that they're like some of the best 2D action games ever... They're so damn fun... SO DAMN FUN!!!)... I am countless times better now than I used to be... Oh and Dragon Warrior... In the past when I tried to get into that game, I was like pssh screw this... Now I have the patience to fight monster after monster after monster for 4 hours straight to level up and get new equiptment just so I can fight more and more and more monsters... |
Re: New Fangled Video Games!
Man, ive always ben good at the old-ish games..for the most part, just look at Duck Hunt. ;)
But i agree, the mega man games own you all. |
Re: New Fangled Video Games!
Well... Part of it might just be that you haven't played for a while. Its not that the new games have ruined your skill, just that you're out of practice with those games.

Re: New Fangled Video Games!
I think I have to agree with Ginkasa... when I'm into an old game, it's not that bad.
Some games though are almost impossible to beat. Adventure of Link gets SO hard in the end. Just before the final boss... you're supposed to walk a really long way past too hard enemies... so you arrive at Shadow Link with just 1 life. :( Not fair... Quote:

Re: New Fangled Video Games!
I agree the games are too easy but with gaming as mainstream as ever, its understandable. About a month ago I began re-collecting the older consoles just because the classics back then were calling me back in. Still got alot of games to get but its a first step in getting back the old games.

Heh. You know what's odd? I was thinking this EXACT thing just a few days ago. When the gametavern arcade first arrived, I thought I would easily get the high score in pacman, because when I was like 5 years old, I owned the game for the Atari, and I would play it every day. I made it past probably a hundred levels without getting caught by any ghost. I play all day long, and I loved it. It was my favorite game of that time period. And you know what I thought was "cool" back then? I thought it was cool that the color of the level changed each time you beat one. I just thought that was awesome. Now, I play the game, and I can barely make it past the fourth map. Then, a few days ago, I hooked up the Metroid Fusioni game that you let me borrow to Metroid Prime, and I got the first Metriod game. I started to play, and I died in just a few minutes. I SUCKED at it. Back when I was a kid, about anywhere from 5-10, I would have owned that game. It would have been no problem. A few months ago, I purchased "The Adventure of Link" at a flea market. Again, the gamed owned me. I couldnt find out where to go, and when I did, I got killed. It may have something to do with not playing the games in a while, but I truely believe that games are so insanely easy now days that my skills as a gamer have actually decreased. I am not the same as I used to be. Moogle, we should get out our old NES's and start playing all the old platformers, like Mario, Mega Man (which is insanely hard), etc. Maybe if we get good at these games again, our skills at new games will be ungodly good. lol. It's worth a shot. The hardest *new* game I have ever played is Mega Man Transmission, for the GCN. Not only is it hard in todays standards, but it also stands as a hard game when compared to old video games. And you know what? I love that game. It's one of my favorite GCN games ever. I used to spend hours upon hours playing that game. Trying to get new chips, and trying to get passed levels. And when I died, I didnt really mind, because it was so much fun getting back up to where I was. The game was hard, yet challenging and rewarding, just like the old games were. |

You just gotta know exactly which way to go, which enemies to fight and which to run from, be good at fighting the ones you fight and avoiding the ones you avoid, then not screw up on the bosses... Now if you wanna talk impossible, let's talk Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 (never played 3)... |
Re: New Fangled Video Games!
I have a hard time with Legend of Zelda because I don't know where anything is and I don't have the patience to explore. Didn't they have a map that came with the game?
|
Re: New Fangled Video Games!
Yeah I still have the map. He he, I'm a dork.
Anyway, Everyone keeps saying the Megaman games were hard, the only one that was hard for me was the first one. I still rule at Megaman games. I can't wait until Anniversary Collection comes out. I'm so excited about playing those never before seen here games. |

Now when you talk about Megaman games, are you talking about the NES versions or the SNES? because both were wickedly fun. |

I too, agree that old games are better. Whenever this topic arises, I like to recall my memorable Sega Genesis days with Sonic and all those other classics.

The only NES games I've played are 2, 3, and 4... 2 is so easy it's not funny, however, in 3 and 4 the bosses have a short period of invincibility after you hit them (unlike in 2, which makes bosses so easy), which makes the battles a bit harder (especially if you don't know all the weaknesses), and the levels are a bit tougher as well... But as I said... they were hard when I was 5 or 6... now they seem much easier... |
