"Supersize that for me"..."We can't sir"

CHICAGO - Say goodbye to those super-sized fries — McDonald's is slimming down its menu.

The hamburger giant has started phasing out its trademark Supersize fries and drinks in its U.S. restaurants as part of an effort to simplify its menu and give customers choices that support "a balanced lifestyle," a company spokesman said Tuesday.

By the end of 2004, Supersize will no longer be available at the nation's 13,000-plus McDonald's outlets except in certain promotions, McDonald's spokesman Walt Riker said.

The move comes as the world's largest restaurant company, and fast-food chains in general, are under growing public pressure to give consumers healthier food options in a nation that has suddenly become aware of its bulging waistline and the health dangers that come with it.

McDonald's began offering entree salads last year and has been moving to provide more fruit, vegetable and yogurt options with its Happy Meals. But the Oak Brook, Ill.-based company remains a magnet for public concerns — and legal actions — about obesity.

Riker said the changes started going into effect in January.

"This core menu, which has been under development since 2002, simplifies our menu and restaurant operations and provides a balance of choices for our customers," he said. "A component of this overall simplification, menu and balanced lifestyle strategy is the ongoing phase-out of the Supersize fry and the Supersize drink options."

The company did not immediately disclose other details of the menu changes.

It looks like supersize will be gone soon. Oh well, I always just get a large at Burger King if I need to. Supersize is too much for me.

People will just order two larges instead, which is more than a super size, so they'll get even fatter.

Lets make everything the size of kids meals. Then we can order 5, eat them all equaling to a supersize and gain 5 toys in the process:D

Hehe America with it's problems. :D

So tell me, how much liter is a supersized coke?
It's kinda weird though... if you want healthier food, you wouldn't go to McDonals would you?? ...
That's probably because those things are EVERYWHERE.

BTW Burger King doesn't even have anything vegetarian... :(

They tried the veggie whopper awhile back, but that kind of flopped. But now they are on the carb kick offering whopper bowls or breakfast bowls, etc...

But Burger King is much better than McDonald's. Because I'm not a vegetarian.

Maybe I could agree with that, but I've never even heard of Hardee's. I guess I don't need to say that I haven't eaten there as well :).

wow, this is terrible news... I hate when companies give in like that.

It's kind of stupid... EVERYBODY knows they offer fatting food, and if it makes you fat, it's your OWN fault. So um, I expect either what Neo said to happen, or I expect for them to start to lose customers and eventually go back to the supersize.

i agree that it is rediculous for the fast food places to get rid of the stuff that is "too fattening" . fast food is known to be bad for you, so people who are that worried about their weight should just eat at the places that have food that is better for you. its not that hard to figure out.

granted, the supersize does say something about the American way of living exhorbanant (is that the right word?) lifestyles, but if someone wants a lot of food, let them have it

it actually kind of makes me wonder if this is actually a money making scheme... no supersize so you've got to get an extra order of fries, which means spend more money

What's crazy to me is... McDonalds doesn't have the biggest drinks or fries...
