Computer is getting fixed... need some suggestions

Ok, we just sent our computer to our local computer store to get it fixed (I think that is the correct word). I think we had several viruses, and the computer was just plain crappy, lol.

Now, in regards for safe web surfing, do you guys have any suggestions? I don't want to mess my computer up again. Is it as simple as not downloading stuff? lol... or is there more involved? thanks in advance.

I use Pccillin for my computer I would run that or go to housecall it's a pc cillin website that scans your computer :)

Jonbo has a good point there too just look down, to go along with that if you do choose to go free then I would reccommend doing this every so often http://housecall.antivirus.com/

Just get an Antivirus program and your set. If you don't want to pay for an AV program, then to to www.grisoft.com and download AVG Free edition. It's a basic av program that will get the job done.

I had Norton Antivirus on my computer... But that didn't seem to work.

Oh well, lol... Thanks for the site, I'll check it out when I get my computer back in the next couple of days.

a lot of it is just common sense, for example, don't download anthing from GAIN or GATOR, and never accept any sponsorers...

Even surfing certain pages can execute viruses on your pc. Your best bet is Norton Internet Security.

Norton sucks. Worked for 3 months(never found a virus), and now it wants me to pay 20 bucks for a year of virus updates. Screw you norton. Be sure to download Ad-aware. Best damn free program ever. You can find it at www.lavasoftusa.com

As for computer fixing places, I hate them. They screwed up our old one. The internet wasnt working, we had a tech guy from ATandT come, he was on it for like 2 hours, couldnt figure it out, so we took it to some place, and it came back smelling like smoke, and I swear the graphics card was never quite the same. Thats why when I start having big problems with my new one im gonna figure them out myself.

Did you have the most recent updates/definitions for Norton? If so, what really happened to your computer? Or what happened to it that it had to go to the shop? I need an understanding of the situation

Adaware is good!

Maybe that's because you didn't have any viruses ;)

Norton is great, I'm using it and it has detected viruses and malicious scripts many times.

I had McAffee first. It began to delete itself since it was infected with the virus. Not fun.

Well for starters you could only use IE for windows updates and use a proper browser like ..oh I don't know for instance ... Mozilla Firebird, Mozilla "Seamonky" Suite, K-Meleon or even Opera.

K-Meleon 0.8.2 is based on the Mozilla 1.5 code base and it is often said to the fastest of the gecko browsers listed above for windows. The UI could be better though.

*grins*

Regular use of both Ad-Aware and Spybot programs is a good idea too, though you will get very little spyware if any while browsing the web with one of the above mentioned browsers compared to Internet Explorer ...heh
