Where's my firewire!?

I just got my 20GB iPod and I don't know if I have a firewire port or not. How do I find out? I have a Dell Dimension 4400 and have no clue where to connect to my iPod. Please help...

If your computer is slightly older, it might not have one. Usually on the back of the computer you'll see a little off rectangular port thing. If you don't see it, you can pick up a firewire PCI card for pretty cheap.

You mean to tell me that you ordered and payed for an iPod and didn't even check to see if you had the right gear for it? :nono:

I hope you have good fortune and find a firewire port on the back.

If you've got USB2.0 you can use that, but you need another adapter, which I'm sure apple overcharges for.

Be much easier just to pick up a PCI firewire card like Jonbo said.

Firewire is better than USB2.0. Though technically slower, it's practically faster, and it charges the Ipod while it's plugged in, unlike USB.

its not quite rectangular. half retangular one side more rounded. You'd notice it if you had one.

not a real big deal tho. pick up a USB adapter at compusa or best buy. or a firewire card. (my firewire plug is on my sound blaster audigy card)

both the adapter or the card will run about $20. But the adapter does have both the firewire and usb on it. i picked it up anyway so i could take it to computers that didnt have firewire. hehe. neat to have.

Yeah, thanks guys. I'll pick up a IEEE 1394 PCI card soon. Thanks for the help guys. I tested it at my friend's house and yeah, just like Stonecutter said, it charges when it's connected to a firewire port.

Well yeah if you've got a 6 pin firewire connector.

If you've got a 4 pin it's a small square thing.

I didnt read the other posts in the thread .. but if your ipod came with the stand you put it in the stand and plug it into the back of ur computer .. its a firewire to usb port... but its gonna tell you that you plugged a high speed usb into a non high speed port but you can still use it to like .98 mb per second for mine which is still awesome :)
