What a night...

You would not believe how pissed off I am right now. Last night, I got a new computer, a Dell Dimension 2400. So, after setting everything up in Windows XP, I click on Internet Explorer to go on the internet to download AIM on the new computer... and guess what? It didn't work! No sites were working. So I figured it would have been an ISP problem, so I call my ISP. After 40 minutes of being on the phone, the guy tried everything. The weird thing is that the connection is there, he was able to ping my computer and I was able to ping his, but the damn intenret explorer (or the other online applications like windows messenger) wouldn't work. So the guy at my ISP says that he has no idea, because he tried everything they could in order to fix this. So he tells me to call the Dell Support line. I call Dell, and the guy made me go through a bunch of procedures, and nothing worked! To make it worse, the guy was from India and I had a really hard time understanding him. But anyway, after about 50 min, the Dell guy says that there may be a corrupted file, so he tells me to take the Windows XP reinstallation disc and reinstall windows xp, to fix any files. This process took 35 minutes. And finally, after getting it reinstalled... it did not work once again. So I said **** it, I hung up, it was about 12:15am anyway, I was getting tired and didn't want to put up with this BS right now. So I called again this morning, and they have no damn clue as to what the problem is. My ISP configurations are fine, the network card that came with the computer is fine, and the connection is fine... yet when I try to get into Internet Explorer, nothing works. Does anyone have any clue what's wrong? I guess it doens't matter anyway, because I'm brining back the new Dell and I am either going to get a custom built PC or get my current one upgraded. I think I officially hate manufactured computers now :)

The PC was delivered at 9pm, I didn't get off the phone until like 12:15 am, which includes the time spent talking to my ISP, Dell, the time to wait for XP to reinstall, and also sitting tehre waiting for a Dell service rep to pick up the damn phone. So like I said I am just going to get a custom built PC, it'll be cheaper anyway.

what kind of connection you have? Sounds like the IP was never configured.

if you have broadband. reset the router (unplug it, then plug it back in) and might want to try that with your computer off.

I have cable. I do not have a router, and, my modem was unplugged and replugged three times, because my ISP had to reset the modem because it can only recognize one connection at a time, so we had to switch it from my old pc to the dell, and this morning we switched it back from the dell onto my old now, so I was able to use the internet again.

What's windows update?

And yes, I was on the main account. I made two accounts, and I've been using the main one.

goto start, and All programs. at the top theres the windows update.

if it lets you download anything. theres a good chance it is something needed updating.

If not, make sure the account your using. is setup as a Admin account. or something close to it. make sure it doesnt have like parental controls on it.

Well, my other PC's internet is disconnected now, because my ISP had to transfer it, but I will go in and see about the admin account. I'm going to run the FFXI benchmark program on the Dell, if I get good results then I am just going to call the store from where I bought it from and see what they can do. Thanks though.

It's a Dell Dimension 2400. I don't know the full specs, but it has a 40GB hard drive, 256 MB RAM (dont know which kind), a 2.4 ghz processor.

I don't know if I am going to keep it yet. The place I got it from is like a rental place, you rent it until you own, so I can bring it back any time. The stuff you get though is brand new, not used or anything. I am going to try it out for a while, see if I like it. If not I'll go with a Custom PC.
