Nintendo Sales

Quote:

DID YOU KNOW?

Calling it a "magic trick worthy of Harry Potter," Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing for Nintendo of America Inc., recognized the video game industry's record year at the 2002 Salomon Smith Barney Leisure Conference at Toy Fair in New York. MacDougall noted that the video game industry attained revenues of more than $9 billion in the United States last year, surpassing the total box office receipts for the movie industry. Nintendo regains its leadership position in the industry by once again selling more dedicated video game systems and games than anyone else in the country.

2001 INDUSTRY HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The industry's sales accelerated largely on the strength of three new hardware introductions, the NINTENDO GAMECUBE™ and Game Boy® Advance from Nintendo, and the Xbox from Microsoft
  • The Interactive Digital Software Association (IDSA) reports that the total video game playing universe now includes 60 percent of all Americans; this equates to nearly 150 million people
  • Forty-six percent of all households own video games systems
Year-end video game industry figures from an independent sales monitoring service (NPD Group):
  • The dedicated video game business (as opposed to PC gaming) soared a staggering 43 percent over the year 2000
  • Game hardware units alone were up 40 percent over 2000

NINTENDO GAMECUBE:
  • Of the 2.7 million NINTENDO GAMECUBES shipped to retail worldwide in 2001, 95 percent wound up in consumer hands by New Year's Day
  • North America: 1.25 million units sold
  • Japan: 1.3 million units sold

GAME BOY ADVANCE:
  • Game Boy Advance is a $1.7 billion industry in America
  • Game Boy Advance represents more than a third of all game hardware unit sales
  • Over the past 13 years, Nintendo has sold more than 125 million Game Boy systems worldwide
  • More than 100 titles on the market play only on Game Boy Advance
  • With backwards compatibility to play virtually any Game Boy game ever released, the Game Boy Advance library extends to more than 1,000 choices
  • In 2001, Pokémon® Crystal sold through 1.4 million games in America alone, ranking it third among all video game titles

WHAT'S AHEAD FOR NINTENDO AND THE VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY:
  • Sales of NINTENDO GAMECUBE and Game Boy Advance will expand Nintendo's total U.S market share to 40 percent. Estimated 2002 sales projections are:
  • Game Boy Advance - 7 million hardware units and 23 million games
  • NINTENDO GAMECUBE - 4.5 million systems and 18 million pieces of game software
  • Zelda™, Metroid® and Star Fox® are a few of the proven Nintendo franchises debuting in 2002 on NINTENDO GAMECUBE and Game Boy Advance
  • Analysts estimate total industry revenue of $10 to $11 billion for 2002

Nintendo expects to sell 4.5 million Gamecubes this year?

They better do better than that

That's just North America, you know. If sales in Japan and Europe are strong, then 4.5 million units in North America is pretty good.

That's a big if, I know, but if we knew exactly how the future would play out, videogame forums would be a lot less interesting.
