"GAMECUBE OUTSELLS PS2 IN UK!

Price cut bonanza and storming Metroid Prime launch makes Nintendo the shock number one in both hardware and software charts

18:23 It's been a tough old few weeks for Nintendo of Europe, with the Dixons group announcing it is to stop selling GameCube hardware and problems with other stockists regarding its network adaptors. But the release of the stunning Metroid Prime and the crazy price slash-o-rama in operation by certain retailers has ensured GameCube has achieved that most rare of doubles for the company: biggest selling hardware of the week with the number one selling title across all-formats.
PS2 has consistently soared ahead of the competition for months on end, but thanks to massive, apparently irresistible GameCube bundles from chains like Argos and Dixons, GameCube has managed to outsell Sony's gaming behemoth. For the week ending March 22, GameCube saw a rise in sales of over 60 percent, while PS2, GBA and Xbox all dropped by between 10 and 15 percent.

Furthermore, the GameCube-exclusive Metroid Prime has shot straight to the top of the UK all-formats chart, compiled by ChartTrack, beating off stiff competition from huge multiformat franchises like The Sims and Rayman.

Argos, with it's terrific offer of a GameCube plus game and memory card for £79.98 is thought to have played a large part in this increase, and a spokesperson told us: "We're delighted by the response of our customers."

But it is Nintendo itself that will be sporting the broadest smile this week, with head of European PR Shelly Friend telling us: "We've had a great week - GameCube sold around 14,000 units in the UK and on top of that Metroid Prime launched at number one in the all-formats charts. Now we're just looking forward to the launch of GBA SP which we expect to be a great success."

Whether GameCube maintains this performance is clearly open to question, but right now the European arm of the company has every reason to feel buoyant, with the eagerly anticipated launch of GBA SP this Friday likely to provide a further boost.

Well, with Argos confirming that it will keep selling the GC, and at it's current price too, it seems as though the GC will definately start selling a whole lot better. Other stores will also follow suit (price match deals). And with Zelda on the horizon, it seems as though the GC may well take second place in Europe once again. Only time will tell.

Question for GT users: Will the Gamecube be able to keep these sales going for week after week after week?

Sure...but beat the PS2 in sales? That has never happend in America...at least not to my knowledge.

I thought they still needed to beat Xbox over they. But hey, this is good news.

probably a little bit, but once Zelda gets released, it's going to bounce right back up.

Perfect Stu 03-25-2003 06:20 PM

just to make sure, you guys do realize that the big sales were heavily influenced by the fact that some stores were selling the system + free game(s) for really low prices, right?

Xantar 03-25-2003 06:41 PM

So I suppose it depends on whether the stores decide to keep that deal.

And that depends on how much Nintendo is selling the consoles to retailers for.

Like some people here, I predict that this won't last. Just for starters, what big games are out on the PS2 in Europe right now? I haven't heard of any, but one of them is all it's going to take for the PS2 to start wiping the floor again. Or maybe it won't even require that. Nintendo games have tended to sell big in opening weeks and then disappear from the charts rather quickly.

In general, I take this news the same way I take news about the Xbox beating the GameCube in Japan for one week. It's no big deal, it won't last and it's not even really an indication of a good future.

Shadow_Link 03-25-2003 07:26 PM

Just so you know, Argos WILL be keeping this deal, and they won't be dropping the cube.

This also means that many other retailers WILL follow suit because of their price match promises. The only group dropping supposedly dropping the Cube is the Dixons group. The rest are keeping it.

This only means one thing, this deal will do for the Cube that the other deal did for the Xbox, and it's starting to show. Like I said before though, time will tell. It seems to be running in Nintendo's favour at the moment though.

I don't think it will maintain sales these high every week, but it will definately keep the sales atleast as high as the Xbox's, and maybe even nearly as high as the PS2's on average. Again, we can only tell in a few months.

Well, I think that's the general point of a price drop... you know, to increase sales ;). It worked for the Xbox (after several price cuts).

Jonbo298 03-25-2003 09:30 PM

This is good news. With Nintendo topping PS2 for a week in Japan and now the UK, all there is left is the US to top for a week or more. And with Zelda just now released recently, I want to see how well its doing in the US. And Perfect Stu, I know you're trying to aggravate me into making a biased reply that you want to blow out of proportion, but its not gonna happen;):D

I could turn every piece of news about PS2 dominating Gamecube into a personal insult towards each and every Gamecube fan - especially the pathetic ones like you...

Is that what we want?...cause I'm game
